Having an issue with a Dell Inspiron 5100 with XP Pro. The user apprently installed some Kodak digital camera software then all the sudden got a BSOD on the next reboot. The BSOD is a REGISTRY_ERROR with STOP code 0x00000051.

The machine won't boot in Safe Mode nor will it revert to Last Known Good Configuration - get the same BSOD every time. So I booted from the XP Pro CD to try a Repair/Recovery. Before it even gets to the recovery console the BSOD appears. So I decided to try running Windows setup - same thing - BSOD. The CD will load all the way up until the screen where you choose either Setup or Repair/Recovery. The BSOD appears after you accept the License Agreement when trying to run Setup. On Recovery, it appears when you choose C: as the drive you wish to repair.

Any suggestions as to where I should go from here? I used a CD-Based Linux OS (Knoppix) and was able to recover all the files I needed from the drive, so I'm not worried about losing anything. The partitions are obviously still there as I was able to access C: from within Knoppix. Just keep getting the BSOD no matter what I try in Windows.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Howdy,

Can't find any reference on Microsoft.com for the issue but Research Machines know the issue all too well.

As yet the only cure is to do a full rebuid of the station from the server. Apparently seems to be caused by mega corruption of 'HKLM/software' reg key or if it's missing. Well, i'll let you have a read, here's the article :

Sorry, not really much help but at least there's some explanation in there. Maybe reinstall is your only option.

I suspect TSSTechie is correct, you need to do an in-place reinstall of XP.

But fight the good fight. At the heart of the issue is registry corruption; and in particular IRQ assignments at start:
It is equally possible that there is an unresolvable hardware problem as it is a case of just registry corruption. If it is the former, then the repair of XP will not help.

How to fight:

. remove all USB devices (unless mouse and keyboard if you have no alternatives);
. remove any PCI devices not needed at the moment: modems, ethernet adapters, added video, 1394 boards, additional USB boards, etc.

Boot from the CD and try Recovery Console again. If it Blue Screens at this point, I bow to TSStechie's wisdom and advice. You have no choice.

As the only thing you seem to have access to is the bios you are limited as to what to try. Perhaps checking for bios updates, returning the bios settings to default, and switching off any bios anti virus checking.

Other things you might be able to do are to check your RAM with programs that run from a bootable floppy.

And also the drive manufacturer, should have freeware diagnostic programs that can boot from floppy.

You might be able to use the access with Knoppix to rebuild your Registry as per these articles (which in normal circumstances use the Recovery Console).

An easy to follow recovery console description when unable to start computer due to corrupt registry.

Click on Tutorial then the Charlie White article on XP crash.
This is a layman's version of Q307545 in simple language.

But what it is probably going to come down to is a reformat and reinstall. All the best.

Thanks for all the suggestions so far. I will try all of your ideas and let you know if I have any success. Thanks again.
