I have a small network and recently changed a bunch of computer names to fit a desired layout. Now all the old computer names are still showing up in the workgroup even though they don't exist. Does anyone know how to fix this?

The browse list takes a while to refresh. It should clear itself out after a while. Are you using a WINS server in your environment?

I assumed the names would disappear sooner or later, but was wondering if there was a way to do it on the fly. No we are not using a WINS server. Just 35 statically configured cpus on a VPN with a Soho Firebox as our gateway.

1) Close all windows.
2) Click Start, click Run and type REGEDIT and hit enter.
3) Click the "+" symbol next to Hkey Current User, click the "+" symbol next to Software, click the "+" symbol next to Microsoft, click the "+" symbol next to Windows, click the "+" symbol next to Current Version, click the "+" symbol next to Explorer, click the "+" symbol next to
NetCrawl and then click on the yellow folder next to Printers.
4) Select each item listed in the window to the right, by clicking once on it, and then press the delete button. DO NOT REMOVE THE FIRST ITEM LABELED "(DEFAULT) Value Not Set". Repeat this process until the window on the right is empty except for "(Default) value not set".
5) Next, just below the yellow 'Printers' folder, you should see another yellow folder labeled "Shares", click once on the yellow folder. Repeat the same process used in step 4.
6) Click Registry (at the top of the window) and Click Exit.
7) Re-boot the PC.

I don't have a netcrawl entry. Does it matter that I have windows 2k pro?

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\WorkgroupCrawler\Shares

Don't have that either. I started looking around other root entries, and under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion there is a netcache folder, and also in hkey_local_machine...\currentversion\explorer there is a networkneighborhood folder. Any of these?

Stay with the Hkey_Current_User hive.

Look here too: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Network
