My DSL says its a computer problem. My computer manuf. says it's not their problem. Situation: When I boot first time of the day, I can receive email but can not send UNTIL I go into Outlook Express accounts and correct changes made since I shutdown. What I find on startup (or restart): the server name in the email accounts has been changed to "local host" when it should be "incoming.verizon.net" and each email username has been changed to example: "joeblow/incoming.verizon.net." The account passwords are unchanged. I have PC-cillin running at startup and scans indicate no viruses. I'm using WinXp Pro. This has been going on for about 6 weeks and I can't recall anything that I changed in the system to cause this. Anybody know how to fix this pain? Thanks!

You are using PC-Cillin or Norton for your antivirus and you have e-mail scanning enabled. You really don't need to have e-mail scanning enabled as long as your 'on-access' scanning enabled.

Thanks but please expand your answer. Are you saying that I have email scanning enabled in Outlook Express and since I have PC-cillin running, I don't need OE email scanning? If email scanning is controlled in OE, I don't see it. More please. Thanks!

I just realize that your first post said you have PC-Cillin - somehow I missed that. Anyway, you have the e-mail scanning function enabled in PC-Cillin. That's what's changing your mail server settings in OE. This function (when it works) is a sytem that attempts to stop/block/remove any virus before it reaches your inbox. While this is well intentioned, it tends to be very problematic for some reason.

Your normal, 'on access' virus scanning function stops/quarantines/delets any virus infected files when you access it. So, you can turn off the e-mail scanning feature and still be protected, just at a different time. If you want to test your 'on access' scanning function to be sure, try the eicar test file here.

By the way, Microsoft has also added a feature to Outlook Express to help protect you from virus infection. Have a look at the options under: Tools, Options, Security tab

You rock! Thanks for the followup. I had also just found your Jan. 27 post to another person on the same issue. I disabled email scanning in PC-cillin and rebooted. Settings in email accounts are no longer being changed. After your second post, I created and saved the eicar.com test and PC-cillin DID pick up the test 'virus' insuring that PC-cillin is still guarding the gate. Again, thanks!
