The drive is used on Linux most of time and only need to be used to transfer files from/to a Windows box occasionally. So I would like to use ext2 (native on Linux).
If this a dual boot setup, then that makes sense. I've never tried to read an ext2 partition directly from Windows. If it's only occasionally, have you considered using a usb memory stick or some other intermediate medium?
If this isn't a dual boot, you'd be better off sharing through the network via Samba or NFS.
