i'm running XP with ser pack 2.

Are you using a recent Catalyst driver? These badly designed packages require a valid internet connection to work and a .net framework executable to be present in the system.

thanks. i have XP HOME and the latest drivers [catalyst] from ati. the same thing happens when i have the latest drivers from microsoft. i have ser pack 2 and the drivers are built into winxp, but no workee. i was thinking that there may be some sort of mainboard/chipset hassel,but so far, no clue

Have you tried disabling your firewall for a minute, just to see if it makes any difference?

I haven't tried it recently, but ATI has a customer feedback utility (that gathers system information automatically) for problem reporting. When I used it they responded with a valid answer. Give it a try.
