When you have 2 S8710 servers.. 1 is obviously active and the other is primary. I went to do a shutdown so I started with the standby server. It forced me to busy it out before shutting down which worked. When I went to shutdown the primary (all from the maintenance web page) it wouldn't allow me to because the server was in an active state and said to do a shutdown -f. Where would you even enter such a command if your shutting down via the web? I couldn't busy out the server either. What is the proper way to do all this??

If you have already shut 1 S8700 down via web you would then have to login to the Active S8700 via service port on the back with a crossover cable address 192.11.13.6. Statically address your computer with 192.11.13.5 and ping 192.11.13.6. When you get a reply then telnet 192.11.13.6. you will then be at the shell command prompt. Type "server" to get server health active or standby. Then you type "shutdown -f" and if active the server should go down.

so in an emergency working remotely how is that done?? There'd be no way to get to that service port.

If you are dialed in go to the CM portion and at the command prompt type "go shell" and you will be at the shell prompt. That is how you would do it remotely.

If you are logged into the active server and have already shut the standby server down then select the radio button "Delayed Shutdown". Then select the check box "Shutdown even if this is the Active Server". If you are looking at just doing a reboot the also select "Restart server after shutdown"

Doing the work remotely for the shutdown is no problem, the power up is a little harder to do remotely.
