We've used group policy to instruct our locked down windows XP clients to fetch windows updates from MS servers. Unfortunately after checking the logs it appears as if the process isn't comlpeting. Here is a sample entry for this morning. Can anyone identify what the problem is;

Although i've read that the 80072efd error is normally associated with SUS, we are not using SUS and have avoided configuring SUS related group policy entries

if your windows update clients access the internet via a proxy, they can't automatically download from windows update when piloted by SUS..
or something like that.
i read this somewhere
(not being very helpful, am i... not enough coffee yet this morning)

google windows update / sus with a proxy, you might find better info..
Pretty sure it is not possible with a proxy...

maybe more relevant
seeing as you dont have SUS...

I had the same error message when I tried to sync with the Microsoft server. The problem is that my firewall denied any Active X pages. Allowing Active X pages resolved the problem.

thanks david,

i've tried the suggestions in the link but still no joy. I'm not sure what to do next, as there is very little in the way of info regarding our particular setup for windowsupdates. (i.e no SUS in a AD environment)

Are you using proxy?

Karlisi,

In answer to ur question, yes we are using a proxy. We've now resolved the problem - we just needed to set the computer proxy config (winHTTP proxy) to the admin proxy config using the proxycfg -u on each machine. I've now encountered a slightly less troublesome problem. Something to do with windows update versions on certain machines i think. I will start a new thread with more details of the problem.

thanks all
