I am humbled by finding a need to ask this question; especially after being a veteran of Appple iie's, Dos, several windows ver's., etc. But, here goes:

I am attempting to rename a sub-directory in windows XP-Home edition. Typically, a right click will provide a dialog box to rename a 'folder'. With this particular sub-directory, there is no available option when 'properties' is launched. I went to a DOS prompt and tried to use the 'rename' command and that did not work. Finally, I went to a FAQ database to enquire about this odd ball situation. The database indicated that some sub-directories' names cannot be changed! This has got to be wrong since the sub-directory was created by me. Here's the path:

C:\Documents and Settings\Myname

Note also that there is also another sub-directory to Documents and settings, this being the default, 'All Users'.

All I'm trying to do is rename 'Myname' to something else. But, no luck. Please humble me by showering me with a simplistic solution. Thanks in advance for anyone out there who's not feeling a bit sadistic at the moment.

Sounds a bit like you are trying to Rename your Username folder. If this is the case then it is quite understandable that Windows might object.

To rename this folder you will have to change your username to the name you want for the folder.

As Administrator, rename the user account by using the User Accounts tool in Control Panel.

On second thoughts you may have to delete this user and create a new one with the name you want. You should be able to make use of My Computer/ Properties/ Advanced/ User Profiles/ Settings to copy your username folder contents to a new username that is created.

See "To copy a user profile" in Help and Support.
