can anyone explain to a dumb@$$ what the Primary Trans IP setting is?

I have read this 50 times and I am still unsure of what they are saying.

Primary Trans. IP Address: Default = 0.0.0.0 (Disabled)
This setting is only available on control units that support a LAN2. Any incoming IP packets without a service or session
are translated to this address if set.

This is used as a firewall gateway between lan1 and lan2 on the older 4xx units.
Typically you will use this when you set-up firewall rules.
This address is used as the gateway to route incoming packets that do not have any firewall rules associated.

Here is a scenario in which this would be used:
IPOffice LAN1 is defined as the internal LAN that is behind the firewall.
LAN2 would be used as the firewall gateway to route packets across the internet or WAN.

You will notice in the in the IPOffice 500 there is no longer a lan1 and lan2 there is a LAN and a WAN.
The LAN2 is essentially the same thing as the WAN.

In the ip world and in almost any router it is named as the DMZ.
So all incoming ip traffic not belonging to a known session is dropped to this ip adress.
It has nothing to do with a firewall although you can apply firewall rules on this connection.

If it ain't dutch it ain't much

Its much like DMZ setting device on a low end router.
You could define a local server / device that would accept all un-associated inbound traffic like MAIL 25, HTTP 80 etc etc, but only one you cannot define by port so its very basic and not used often.
