5.2.1 on 8800's Duplex. i have a small percentage of phones that somtimes register with the CLANs instead of the PE. PE is up and healthy and DHCP only has the active server address. rebooting the phones sometimes wil help but it is very random. its only a few hundred phones total so not past the 2000 limit. the CLANs were never part of dhcp, it has always been PE from the start. at first i dindt care, but it seems that every once and a while we get complaints of no dial tone but signalling is good.

Bro, your PE is configured on what network region? How about your DSP resources? Is there a DSP resource nearby where your IP phones can get? What Network Region was it terminated?

i have 2 CLANS in the same region as backup. im assuming it load balances the same way???

NO it doesnt, the AGL feature is not enabled on PE interface. If you want to use PE on the server, you have to stick with it. For you to control the registration of the phones, H.248 gateways, register it a single network region only (NO CLANS)

Utilize the ip-network-map table to map your stations on its particular medpro or H.248 DSP resources.

The way CM works on the newer versions is, when the IP phone makes a request of the H323 Gatekeepers IP, CM will "load balance" the connections, so if your (2) CLANs are in the same IP network region as the "Processor Ethernet", sometimes the switch will redirect the IP phone to register to one of the CLANs (even though they are not in the DHCP scope). the only way to prevent this is to put the CLANs in a differen IP network region, or disallow H323 registrations on each CLAN (Done on the "change ip-interface 01AXX" form, 2nd or 3rd page I believe)

Mitch,

what are your thoughts on this? since i have the CLANS avaialabel should i leave them in? its only about 600 or so phones today and i know PE cant handle over 2000, but lets say you have 5000 would you do PE and put CLANS in as well so that you can use less boards?
thanks!

The Capacity on CM 5.2.1 with the S8800 is about 17,000 IP phone registrations (or thereabouts). The CLANs really don't compare with a max of 440 IP phone registrations each.

In other words, the PE can handle ALL of you IP phone registrations, and the CLANs really don't help that much. you can disable H323 registrations on them with no problem at all...
