Is it imbedded within the text of the mail message (RTF format, no paperclip icon), or is it an actual attachment (HTML or plain text format with paperclip icon)?

This should solve your problem. Instead of directly opening the attachment try saving it to your computer. Then go to the file and right-click and go to properties. There should be an "Opens With" button. There will also be a button to the right of this called "Change". CLick this and select Acrobat from the list. If Acrobat is not in the list then it means it is not properly installed on your computer, in which case you will have to re-install it.
