Hi all,
I have 2 new computers both running XP Pro connected via crossover Cat5 cable.
PC1 has an ISDN connection while PC2 connects to the Internet via the network cable. My problem is PC2 causes PC1 to continually dial-up even though I am already connected. When I disconnect PC2 by pulling the cable, it fixes the problem.
It is very annoying for the dial-up adaptor to pop up every 5-10 minutes.

PC1 is using 192.168.0.1 while PC2 is using 192.168.0.2 with DNS numbers (for the ISP) installed. Both are accessing the Internet OK its just the dialler is a pain.

Thanks in advance for any help.........

Hi once again bcastner,
Thanks for that reply. I will try it and see how I go.
Cheers.........S

Well I'm back!

I tried the "services" thing with no luck. Set a restore point before I began just in case so when it didn't work I thought I changed settings back to original but PC2 comes up with "unable to display page"

I then did a restore on PC1 but still no Internet though the LAN works fine, again using static address'.

I ran the wizard but even though it said was successful, couldn't see the other computer on network.

Now I've taked a step backwards but at least the rotten dialler isn't popping up all the time.

Oh well, guess I will now have to try the registry tweak but have to get the Internet working first!

When I ran the wizard, PC1 came up with "auto everything" even after I told it that other computers want to connect through this copmputer. I thought for ICS to work, it had to alocate itself 192.168.0.1 Maybe something else is wrong?

Keep ya posted..........

Hi bc,

That info makes the most sense I have seen so far. I didn't have a gateway configured and the DNS I was using is the DNS of my ISP. Also had no idea about mshome.net suffix.
Will try that and let you know.
Thanks again.......

Hi again,

Well did everything to the "T". The only problem I had was in the direction at MS web site the following...

Click Start, click Control Panel, click Performance and Maintenance, and then click System.
Click the Computer Name tab.
Note the entry on the "Full computer name" line.

Couldn't find "Performence & Maintenance" in Control Panel so went to My Computer/properties/name

Unfortunately, both computers see each other fine over LAN but no Internet on PC2. I haven't tried pinging yet but await further instructions... hopefully??

Thanks in advance.

OK. I have the gateway addy for the client as 192.168.0.1 (which is the ip address for ICS host) but no gateway setup for the host. I will try that as well.

PS: The ICS host is accessing the Internet OK. Why does it need a gateway if that isn't a dumb question?

Tried the link you posted but I am not an MVP and don't know which links on the left of the page you are directing me to. It appears to be only downloads. What should I be looking for?

Regards.......

The ICS Host Gateway entry can be left empty, or in the alternative 127.0.0.1 which is a self-reference. Either one will work.

Hi,
I tried to put 127.0.0.1 into the ics server as a gateway but before I got to the first "0" msg popped up telling me "ip address's starting with 127 are not valid because they are reserved for loopback address's" etc etc

I tried again on my own computer with the same results.

I then put the gateway address of 192.168.0.1 into the workstation (PC2) and still didn't work :-(

In frustration I then started from the beginning with the same results.

How can I tell if the ICS server is activated?

Cheers.....
