One day it was fine but the next the above error showed up and no changes had been made but I cannot post or receive emails. I am running Win 98SE with OE6, tried the critical updates it gets part way through and then says something about no connection and won't install - but I'm on broadband!! The other PC on my small network (XP) is fine no problems. On the PC in question IE 6 works fine, and you can ping anything no real connection problem just something up with Outlook Express.

I don't have OE6 on a disk and not having much joy with downloads so reinstalling is a problem. Background Zonealarm been acting up lots of errors and it turns itself off. Full virus check done with latest Norton and AVG - nothing found. Hows this for being subjective - it feels like I have been got by a virus but nothing has been identified yet!

I would welcome some suggestions!!

I had the same issue with OE and Zone Alarm. Once I added the outgoing mail server as a trusted source in ZA the error went away.

Cheers
