There is one computer on our LAN (we are a small agency) that keeps giving the user a "Unable to connect to server" message when she tries to send & receive emails.

The user told me outlook works fine when she begins the workday, but by the afternoon - each day - she gets non-stop "unable to connect to server" messages. The user restarts her computer, which fixes the problem most of the time. She sends quite a bit of email and needs outlook to work without having to restart.

I need to give her a better solution. Any suggestions?? Thank you in advance.

Can she ping the mail server when she gets these messages? DOes she have any other network problems when connecting to other network servers?

I'm not sure how to ping a mail server, but I could call our provider and ask. The server is not in-house, and she hasn't tried connecting to any other servers... What I do know is that she can check web-based email, etc using her internet browser with no problems.

This problem with not connecting happens sort of "out of the blue", though every day. She can connect fine at one point, then it's a losing battle after another point.

I think this is an outlook software problem on her computer only. There are 8 other computers in our building on the same network, connecting to the same server with no problems.

Thanks again for your help... any other suggestions.

Try noting down your incoming / outgoing server settings from your email client.

Then do start - run - cmd or command.com
type
ping mailservername
post the results..
Also another workaround may be

try giving the equiv IP address in the incoming/outgoing mail server instead of host name in the email client settings.
