I have two bind servers. One is the primary and the other is the slave. I am running bind 9.2.3. When named is restarted on the secondary it looks for updates from the primary. But when I look at the main domain zone my.site.com.zone, the first line in the file show $ORIGIN . (note the dot)
Then it prceeds to show $ORIGIN in various places in the zone file.
What exactly is this ORIGIN and what does it do?

It sets the default domain when you don't fully qualify
things with the end '.'. So if

$ORIGIN mydomain.com.
then

A 1.2.3.4

would actually be

in A 1.2.3.4

But if your record was fully specified (ended with .)
then $ORIGIN is ignored.
