I've just bought a basic system without an operating system. The CDRom drive is already sorted, and I've got the Hard Drive ready for an OS. However, when I go to setup the OS the system just reboots itself (it also sometimes happens when I type in /dir in Dos). I've tried Win 98, ME and 2000 but I get the same response.

I've tried booting both through a Win 98 floppy (and choosing CD rom support), and through changing the first boot device to the CD rom and putting the Win ME/Win2k discs in.

When I try the latter I get to the point when its about to install the OS and then it resets.

Does anyone know what may be causing this and have any tips on how to resolve this?

Thanks

Howdy:

Disable the onboard (BIOS) anti-virus program.

Thanks

Turning off the Bios anti-virus program allowed me to install the OS files from the CD with no problems. However, unfortunately the system kept shutting down during the seting up screens of the OS (detecting plug and play hardware, setting up a password, sorting out the control panel etc).

Go into BIOS and set "Failsafe defaults".
Disable any onboard sound, including DOS/MPU-401/Soundblaster support.
Disable all USB ports.
Disable com 1 and 2 (unless you actually still use a standard serial mouse).
Set "PnP OS Installed" to NO.
Set "ACPI" enabled.
Set "Reset configuration data" to YES.
Check operating temps. It could just be running too hot.
Check RAM timings. Set everything to Auto if it's not already.
Try it again.
Once it's running, go into BIOS and enable each component, one at a time.

Cheers,
Jim

Thanks

After many attempts it proved to be overheating problem. I think the heatsink/fan had dislodged in transit. After moving it a bit it installed without a problem
