How can I change this? When I run cd C:\, nothing, goes back to H.

Opening the command prompt normally starts in your "my documents" folder. If you've got "My Documents" redirected to "H:\" then that's where it will start.

Try CD C: (without the \)

Can you give some more information? This is obviously on a network, if you have an H: drive. Is it a thin client? We need a little more info.....

When you say "My motorcycle won't run", there's a big difference between saying "It hasn't been started in 15 years", and "I was going down the highway at 85MPH and it died...." --Me

i think that's set on the properties of command prompt
%homedrive%%homepath%
click on the properties of command prompt and see what's in "start in

instead of %homedrive%%homepath%
just type c: in the "start in" box

hope this helps.

Don't see a "Start In" anywhere in the properties. I am going to Start > Run > cmd The cd C: does nto work, shows C:\ then jumps back to H:\.

If I launch it from the Ssytem32 folder, it opens using that path, C:\Windows\System32

If I launch it from the Run prompt however it starts at my "Home" drive, which is H.

Yes this is a member of a domain, just curious on how to change it though.

Thanks!!!

I see where you were speaking of alidabiri, the shortcut in the Start menu. The issue is that changing that to start in C: still does nothing when running from the Run prompt.

ok,
go to regedit
find "homedrive". you'll see that it's set to "H".
change it to "C".

Same thing. It reverts back to H upon login as well.

is your registry saved? maybe group policy forces registry change, even after you have changed it. check your registry after you have changed it and logged off and back on. if that doesn't do it, i would say that this is log on script.

Hi,
Have you used a SUBST command somewhere or, for some reason, mapped your C: to H:

In explorer, can you browse c:?

Yes when I change it and log off and back on it reverts back to H.

The server is set up to point the H drive as the home drive for each user, which I set up.

Just curious why the cmd prompt opens with H though, may be GPO...not sure.

Yes I can browse C, I have admin rights...

why do you have to open command prompt from run? create a shortcut from start/programs/accessories/command prompt on the desk top, then apply the change that i mentioned to you. it's easier than going to start/run/cmd.exe....
it's faster too.

So now, anyone here know how to grab that Default setting and correct it in the GPO? Where shall I head?

alidabri, the main reason is that any user which does the start > run method will get their home drive, I want to avoid that, was using my systemas a test case so to speak. :)

ok, let me get this straight. you want the users to cmd.exe to c: drive or h: drive? which one?

C drive. I want it to start in the C drive as it normally does, not the H drive.

Chdir is a Help and Support Center article. Have a look at the Command Prompt notes, not the Recovery Console version.

Could it be in the environment variables somewhere? Or perhaps the comspec?

don't type CD C:, simply type C:

'When all else fails.......read the manual'
