I am running Solaris 9 and having a really odd issue. Only root is able to print to any printer on the system. Everything worked fine before a vendor upgraded their software running on this machine, now printing is toast.
Here is what I see...
As root everything works as advertised.
As any other user, lp returns a request ID as expected but nothing ever prints on the printer. I have run a truss on lpsched and see that there is an error when it tries to open the /var/spool/lp/requests/venus/354-0 file. (venus is the server name, 354-0 the ID from lp) As root this file is created and stays in the requests directory until the print job is finished, as a user the file is created, but immediatly gets deleted for some reason.
I have double checked all the file permissions on the file being printed and on everything in /var/spool/lp, /usr/lib/lp and /etc/lp. Everything looks normal to me.
I can't find any errors in the logs and so far Sun tech support has been unable to help me. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks.
