Only root can print

I am running Solaris 9 and having a really odd issue. Only root is able to print to any printer on the system. Everything worked fine before a vendor upgraded their software running on this machine, now printing is toast.

Here is what I see...

As root everything works as advertised.
As any other user, lp returns a request ID as expected but nothing ever prints on the printer. I have run a truss on lpsched and see that there is an error when it tries to open the /var/spool/lp/requests/venus/354-0 file. (venus is the server name, 354-0 the ID from lp) As root this file is created and stays in the requests directory until the print job is finished, as a user the file is created, but immediatly gets deleted for some reason.

I have double checked all the file permissions on the file being printed and on everything in /var/spool/lp, /usr/lib/lp and /etc/lp. Everything looks normal to me.

I can't find any errors in the logs and so far Sun tech support has been unable to help me. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks.

make sure there is a entry for venus in your host file, or that DNS can find it.

Update:
I went through all the links you posted Franz and double checked all the permissions. Everything looks correct. After working with Sun for a while they concluded it was a problem with the HP JetDirect Printer utility we are using. (JetDirect Printer Installer for Unix Version E.10.34) I've since talked to HP and am waiting on another call back. We traced permissions for 2 hours yesterday to no avail.

New queues created using lpadmin work fine, new queues created using the HP software do not work for non-root users.

guggach I did read your post on this topic before I posted, unfort I don't have the option of moving to another server/OS version.

Any other suggestions? Thanks for the help everyone :)

hello
i am pretty sure, this is an undocumented feature of sol9
hp-code is not really elegant, but it runs
no probl with solaris < 9
so ?? i will install sol10
i am happy with my sys, (the good old) sunos4.3.1, sol7 and
sol9
btw: check permissions of / , should be 755 NOT 775
