NW5 and Windows XP: Profile Problem 2

We are currently running a Netware 5.0 Server in a network consisting of Windows XP and Windows 98 machines (predominatly Windows XP). When a user logs into the network, a few seconds after they enter their user ID and password on the Novell Client screen, a box pops up saying 'Slow Network Detected', and prompts to use either the Local Profile, or to Download the profile...

In order for appropriate settings such as the MS Exchange settings for Outlook to load properly, the user must use the DOWNLOAD option. However, we are having a widespread problem of users who are either clicking LOCAL instead of download, -or- they type their password and walk away, and after 30 seconds, the machine automatically selects LOCAL.

Is there a setting change or registry modification that I can perform which will result in the profile automatically being DOWNLOADED from the server, instead of prompting the user for action?

Thanks for your help!

The profile is held on the Novell server. On a drive volume, there is a folder for each user (Their U:\ drive), and the XP Profile is in this folder in a folder called "Windows NT 5.1 Workstation Profile)

not really a roaming profile person - never use them
what kind of size are they?

if they are predominately using same pc - is their a need for roaming profile

also make sure the temp interent files arent being cached here as well - on xp these will be monster

are you having any other connection problem - is speed ok when connected

i think you can turn the slow check off through a zen policy or a quick reg hack

I'm not a big fan of roaming profiles either, well, I'm not a big fan of Novell either, but we have to go by the configuration that was specified and set up by the district.

Yes, though, we do need them, because we have a large number of teachers that switch rooms throughout the day, and/or use various other public and workroom computers throughout the building.

There are no connection problems, the speed copying a file to/fron the server is fine once logged in, however it still prompts 'slow network detected' about 90% of the time.

I've never given any thought to the Temporary Internet Files... I will check this setting when I'm back in the building tomorrow and ensure that it is not caching.

Do you by chance know how to turn off the slow check/set it to always download? I've gone through all the possible places where I though the setting might be, but I couldnt find anything.

THANK YOU SOOOOOO MUCH FOR YOUR HELP!

ok you'll need to snap shot this or something to get exact keys

but you can tweak it with a gpo - so load up gpedit.msc on a pc and find what it changes then nal it out or such like

expand the Computer Configuration node and select Administrative Templates\System\Group Policy folder. Modify the Group Policy slow link detection policy.

In either case, the value must be specified in kbps. To disable slow link detection, use 0 (zero) for this value. By default, the connection speed is set to 500 kbps.

Hey, as much as you hate novell and want to blame it for your problems, it may actually be a Windows problem.

See if this helps...

However,I am concerned that it would be seeing your local network as a slow link. You should probably check your infrastructure and see if you can find anything that is out of whack.
