Technical Post

Management have decided to give in against a persistant user who wanted local admin rights on NT Workstation. I have been tasked to see how far I can go with these rights, so that we can then tell management (who won't change their mind) what they are letting themselves in for. With Local Admin, you can do quite a lot to the local machine, but can I alter anything that might knacker the network?

In fact, any pointers would be appreciated.

network in what terms??

If you mean knacker anything in the terms of your pc then yes, it is possible to disconnect yourself accidently by deleting something or indirectly altering some information to connect your PC to the network...

But if you mean externaly on other users machine, then the answer is really a no. You will have the same priveleges (however you spell it) as if you was a user logged in under a user account.

If you have a server or workgroups, connecting to them (only in NT and possibly 2000) allows you to supply a username and a password to access shared files on the destination PC across the network, so you can still supply the usernames and passwords supplied by your administrator.

(ie: you cannot do anything externally no matter who you are logged in under).
A tip would be:
++++
Do everything as you did before, just because you have full control of your PC now doesnt mean you should try everything! Administrators begin to cry(or drink more and become unstable and kill everyone in the office) and bosses need to buy new wigs because no work is being done when you break your work tools.

Tip 2.

Ask your company to buy a server, and when things are buggered up, blame the server... yes the Administrators will still kill you, but the boss will believe you!

( i know, i'm an Admin guy here ... drink, drink,scream!)
Correct me if i'm wrong guys!!!
That is what I thought. I am one of a team of Admin people, and this is something that we have fought against. I dread to think what the user will do to it. We are 3rd line support, and have said that we are having nothing to do with it.
Back on our desks by the end of the week? I think so....
