I've got a CS1000e system I've set up with a stand alone nortel rack-mount signaling server. In the CS1000e chassis, I've got a MC32 VGMC card that has a red light on it I cannot get to go out. The display is reading F000 (follower) when the sig server is hooked up and if I disconnect it, it will read M000 (master). I'm new at administering these, but I do have access to element manager and access to the call server via serial connection. I've got all the equipment plugged into the same data switch and can ping every address of each individual card and equipment (Elan & Tlan).

When I go to load 117 and stat serv, it sees the MC32 and says the link is up, but I need to know why the light is red on the faceplate and what I need to do to get it go out. Element manager is showing the card is unequipped, but I can see the channels on the VGMC (MC32) card. Basically I'm looking for help on getting this up and running so I can test VOIP phones. There will be no trunks or access to the outside world. My set up will be strictly for test purposes. Thanks in advance.

You probably need to push the loadware to the card. Have you done that? What release is the PBX?

I'm not sure on the release, I received this system from a company that took it out of production so it has their configuration on it (IP address scheme, etc). I was hoping I could just fire it up, and start using it test phones with. I'm more familiar with BCM's and Avaya IP office's, so I'm still getting my feet wet with the larger systems. I'll get into element manager soon and check the release and get back to you. Thanks.

If you go into the command line in ld 22 and type the command iss it will give you the release.

Ok, I found the version. Here is what I got:

CALL SERVER/MAIN CAB
VERSION 2121
RELEASE 4
ISSUE 50 W +
IDLE_SET_DISPLAY OFSS

I think the MC32 was from your old CS1000 system at 4.5w. As you have stated that you have a CS1000e, I expect that you have MGC cards in slot "0". Although the MC32 can be upgraded and used with the CS1000e, I think the installers decided not to use it. It might be an idea to see if it can be removed?.

If it's working, then leave it alone!.

The MC32 was part of this cabinet in a production environment. This entire cs1ke system was pulled from a working environment and bought by my company to use for testing IP phone purposes. I have a SSC card installed in slot 0 and the MC32 card is installed in slot 3.

Also, when registering IP phones, should S1 be the IP of the call server(the ssc card in slot 0 in my case), or the sig server?

S1 should be your Node IP, or if you only have one SS then you can use that IP address if you want.

If you stat the MC32 card in ld 32 what does it show?

go over your IP addresses for the card also, if element manager does not see the channels, maybe that's why.

If I stat the MC32 Card in LD 32 is says:

00=unit 00=dsbl (TRK)(IPTN UNREG) OWK /OWK )

And the same for the rest of the 31 channels.

Also if I got to element manager and go to system maint and stat card 33 (my mc32 card) it says unequipped. Element manager can see that my mc32 card is installed with an ip of 172.31.1.23 however, I cannot get an IP phone to register to the Sig Server, or the call server IP, or the Node IP. Where can I find what port I need for any of the above? I can also ping the ip of the mc32 card fine from the sig server and my PC connected to the system as well as an ip phone.

I know this may seem kinda basic but do you have the ELAN and TLAN ports connected? If this was in fact a working system it should have come right back on line without any intervention on your part.

yes, both the Elan and Tlan ports are connected. The MC32 card is showing a green light for both elan and tlan as well as a flashing activity light for both. This is not the complete system that was pulled. This is the signaling server and one of the media gateways (media gateway #1 of 3). All IP's are ping-able, I'm just not sure how I should set my phone up to connect (what to give it for s1, port, gateway, ip address). I'm also not sure why my MC32 is showing unequipped but when stating it in ld 117 all links are up and active.

I'm thinking yo may need to sync your node properties. If the links are up then you can be assured the ELAN is working because the Call Server only has an ELAN, I would still question the TLAN connections. Put your laptop in the TLAN and make sure you can ping all the TLAN addresses too. S1 should always be your node IP address, port is 4100, gateway is usually the .1 address.

You said :
"I cannot get an IP phone to register to the Sig Server, or the call server IP, or the Node IP. Where can I find what port I need for any of the above?"

ok, start with the basics, can you ping the NODE ip (as this is the IP address you will use for your IP phones to register with)

Port should be 4100 for the S1 (node IP) on the ip phones config.

if this part does not work, back track and make sure your connections / ip addresses are correct.(as mentioned above)

forget about the MC32 until your sig server is operational and your IP phones register, you might be looking at multiple issues.

you don't need an MC32 card to register IP phones to the Sig Server. Once your server works (and ip phones register) move on the the MC32 card after.... that way, you don't need to work on multiple issues at once. just a suggestion.

I've got the phone to the node and TN screen, however when I assign it both of these it goes to upgrading firmware along with the IP of Elan on the Sig Server (172.31.2.30, and my Tlan address is 1.30) and it just keeps doing this over and over. When looking for unused voice units can an 1140 register as an i2004? I found my available TN's but they are all for i2004's.

on 4.5 i think so, it works on 3.0 for sure. You might need to put in later firmware (for 11xx), what might be happening is your firmware is OLD on the sig server, and newer on the phone, and it won't let you downgrade....

I don't think the 1140 phones were available when 4.5 came out. What are you putting in for the Node ID ? Have you looked at the node in Element Manager to see what the configuration is?

I'm putting the node ID in that shows in element manager which is 1001 for my system

So are you using dhcp or static addresses? Once again I don't think 1140 phones were out then. Not sure if they will work or not on your 4.5
