Customer is using an old PBX with Analog Lines. Instead of doing a true 3 way Conference call for another internal party, they just tell the person to jump on Line 1, Line 2, etc. They want this same feature with a new IP office. Is there anyway to make the analog lines open so that others can jump on a line being used?

why would you want to tie up all of your lines this way, this is crazy!

Its not our way of doing it, this is the customers MUST on a new system.
I don't see how they are tying up all their lines though. They just want another internal person to be able to jump on the same line they are on.

Then give them a line appearance of those lies on their phones. Not the preferred way to do this thou

Have them use the call intrude feature.

Call Intrude
This feature allows you to intrude on the existing connected call of the specified target user. All call parties are put into a conference and can talk to and hear each other. A Call Intrude attempt to a user who is idle becomes a Priority Call.

The ability to intrude and be intruded is controlled by two configuration settings, the Can Intrude (User | Telephony | Supervisor Settings) setting of the user intruding and the Cannot Be Intruded (User | Telephony | Supervisor Settings) setting of target being intruded on. The setting of any other internal party is ignored. By default, no users can intrude and all users are set to cannot be intruded.

Note that this feature requires conference resources from the system for the duration of the intrusion.

Users can use privacy features that to indicate that a call cannot be intruded on. See Private Calls.

Intruding onto a user doing silent monitoring (Call Listen) is turned into a silent monitoring call.

The system support a range of other call intrusion methods in addition to this feature.

Telephone Number: Target extension number.

Default Short Code:

Programmable Button Control: Intru

We would have all the line appearances on the phones. Even doing it this way, aren't the line locked down so no one else can jump on?

Line Appearance Buttons
Line appearance buttons allow specific individual line to be used when making calls or answered when they have an incoming call. It also allows users to bridge into calls on a particular line.

Thanks for the help. Line appearance buttons and turning on/off Can Intrude/Cannot be intruded did what I was looking for.

Sell them a different system or better yet refer them to one of your competitors.

trying to operate an IP office as an obsolete key system will cause you nothing but pain.

try to educate the customer on how bad this idea actual is, the suggestions above will work, but what stops a user listening in to a call they should not be (such as the CEO's private calls?)

Joe2938- I was saying that the solution worked. Line appearances on the phones. I the user is set to can intrude, they can jump on that line if already in use. If cannot be intruded is turned on, then you cannot jump on a live line.

IPGuru- we have sold plenty of IP offices setup as a key system using analog lines. We have Never had any issues.

I am glad it is working fro you
it is not the impression I get regarding key system operation by reading all the posts here on tek-tips

Personally we never attempt to emulate key system operation although 99% of our installations have ISDN or SIP trunks (& I will not allow our sales team to even think about selling Muppet mode!).

In most cases Line appearance keys are an unnecessary abomination, I think you have finally found a justifiable usage case for them although there is still the security issue of anyone being able to listen in & also the annoyance of all phones ringing instead of just the relevant parties.

for very small companies (family business type) this is probably not an issue.
