Can anyone offer any advice?

I am trying to allow network clients to access the net via a windows 2000 server. I have set up the DNS, RRAS using NAT.

First, I fixed the ip address's of the servers NIC's, the clients are also fixed. Then I set up RRAS, next I deleted "." from DNS and enabled forwarders

The server and the clients can all ping and tracert ok, using both ip address and name so DNS looks ok. When I try to browse the net, Internet Explorer displays "connecting to" and the ip address of the external connection nic and after about 20 seconds returns the server can not be found error. This also occurs when tring to browse on the server

Both NIC's have fixed ip, with only the external connection having a gateway entered. The clients have the server name and port (80 and 8080, tried both) entered in explorer.

Hope information is ok

Can the server access web pages? And when you say everyone can ping by name and IP, that is web pages?
And there is no firewall?

Thanks,

Have you set up a static route to the external nic - unless of course you are using some sort of proxy software.

Also, just make sure that the DNS address in the first nic is that of your server and not ISP. The second nic should have the DNS of your ISP.

Also, if you are not using proxy software you will need to put the gateway address in the client TCP properties.

I am pretty sure it is the second card that is causing you problems - disable it and configure just one card just to see if you can browse.

Hi

No, the server cannot access web pages, the server gets the same error just like the clients. the server and clients can ping web pages ie etc

There is a firewall, but result is the same with it off.

by the way, gateway is a linksys router to a cable connection.

No proxy software installed, I will give it a go with just one card.

Thanks

Result from only one nic

Still can't access the web via the server unless I detect settings from the router. If i set use proxy server in IE to the server name then "cannot find server or DNS error"

Setting for nic

fixed ip, gateway set to routers ip, dns set to isp's settings

Just it case it means anything

when you start to browse,

IE reports "connecting to 192.168.1.3", which is the ip address of the nic connecting to the net.

Then Error Box "Could not open the search page"

OIC

you have a linksys router - same here. I had similar problems with that baby too. Firstly set the wan connection to DHCP and then go to "status" to check that you have recieved your Ip addresses.

Now go to "advanced" and then to "mac address clone". Now choose user define and apply the changes.

I have IE set to automatically detect settings.

Hope this helps.

All the setting on the router are ok, I can surf from the server and clients if I detect settings from the router, however, I need to route the clients through the server for security reasons. I am tring to replicate the network at work, which uses 2000 server and a adsl line, the server connects to the adsl using one nic and the network connects to the server using another nic. all the clients access the net using a proxy setting pointing to the server. I just can't seem to figure out how this was setup.

well, you will need some software like MS proxy server\ squid or wingate. The second nic would have to be set up as an external interface meaning that this IP would not be the same as your lan subnet.

Alas I am talking from NT server 4 experience and have only just installed win 2k server on a test network. On this network all users go through the router to access the net.

On my NT 4 network, I have MS proxy server with an external nic that goes directy to the router. all users connect via the proxy server then on to the net. I use challenge responce which authenticates the user before they can browse.

If you don't have any of the above software then you will need to add a static route to the second card - basically saying all traffic destined to another network go through nic 2.

Hope this helps.

From the config you listed, your server is essentially serving the purpose of a router.

If you do not have proxy software installed on the server then you do not want to set proxy settings on the client. So under Tools/Options/Connections/Lan, make sure nothing is active.

NOTE: I'm using example IP's

Your TCP/IP settings on the client side should be
IP Address: 10.10.1.50 (set by DHCP scope?)
Subnet: 255.255.255.0
Gateway: 10.10.1.1
DNS: 10.10.1.1

Your settings on the server should be:
External Interface:
IP: 192.168.1.1
Subnet: 255.255.255.0
Gateway: 192.168.1.254 (IP of upstream router)
DNS: DNS servers of ISP
Sharing: Enable sharing on this interface

Internal Interface:
IP: 10.10.1.1
Subnet: 255.255.255.0
Gateway: blank
DNS: 10.10.1.1

Give that a try.
Andy

Thanks Andy,

Been attempting to get the NIC sharing to work all morning, keeps telling me that the private network is either not present or is disconnected.

According to MS KB, this error can occur if another device has the ip addy 192.168.0.1.

I have unplugged everything except the router, one client and the server and I know that 192.168.0.1 does not exist.

I am still not able to get the sharing to set up.

Ok,

Now I am moving forward at last,

I can surf again from the server, but the clients can't, but they do resolce the ip address.

When you type ie says connecting to *.*.*.*, so it appears that dns is working ok. however, the client is still returning "cannot find serevr or DNS error" after about 30 seconds

W2rus

I believe jono261970 has it, add a static route on your internal interface with destination 0.0.0.0 mask 0.0.0.0 and the gateway will be your external interface....

Thanks,

Sorry for missing the last couple days.

After all the modifications you've made, what are your current addresses for your router, external interface, internal interface, a client that's trying to connect.

Thanks,
Andy

Ok, my current settings are

Client (fixed)

IP 192.168.1.50
SUB 255.255.255.255
G/W 192.168.1.22
DNS 192.168.1.22

Server Local interface

IP 192.168.1.22
Sub 255.255.255.0
Gateway is blank
DNS 192.168.1.22

Server Internet interface

Ip 192.168.1.50 (Router DHCP)
Sub 255.255.255.0
DNS set to isp's recommended
Gateway 192.168.1.1 (routers ip)

Sharing enabled on internet interface.

When I tried RRAS with a static route of 0.0.0.0,0.0.0.0 and external interface, the server could not browse the web

The server now is taking between 1/2 and 3/4 hour to re-boot, sticks on preparing network connections.

Client resolves host name ok when trying to browse, but just times out and returns a "Could not find Server or DNS" error

Server can browse the web.

Any more info required?

Cheers for all your help so far

sorry,

the settings the previous post were incorrect.

Local interface should have been

ip 192.168.0.1
sub 255.255.255.0
dns 192.168.0.1

Client

ip 192.168.0.2
sub 255.255.255.0
gateway 192.168.0.1
dns 192.168.0.1

I am thinking of wipeing all the settings and starting again, if only to get the server to boot in something like a normal time

Cheers

W2rus

Start over and use these settings...

Your TCP/IP settings on the client side should be
IP Address: 10.10.1.50 (set by DHCP scope?)
Subnet: 255.255.255.0
Gateway: 10.10.1.1
DNS: 10.10.1.1

Your settings on the server should be:
External Interface:
IP: 192.168.1.10
Subnet: 255.255.255.0
Gateway: 192.168.1.1 (IP of router)
DNS: DNS servers of ISP
Sharing: Enable sharing on this interface

Internal Interface:
IP: 10.10.1.1
Subnet: 255.255.255.0
Gateway: blank
DNS: 10.10.1.1

You have some issues with your current settings... Use the above settings, and we can go from there.

Also, You said that you setup the DNS server on the server? Make sure you have forwarders setup correctly to your ISP's DNS server addresses.

Let me know how it goes. You can start the server in safe mode without network support if you need to.

Thank you to everyone who has offered advice on this matter.

I now have a working connection,

still don't exactly know why it was not working, but started with a clean slate tonight and all is working now

Thanks again
