I don't get any sound anymore ,i.e if I play a CD, if I listen to audio streams on my win98 etc. As usual, this did not happen before but of lately.AFAIK no new software's been installed.
When I click the 'volume control' all checkboxes are un-marked , but the bar graph by the "wave" is greyed out(while playing CDs)

while playing audio streams, the "wave" bar graph moves up and down(suggestine Life), but no audible sounds.

Can anyone start me off with the 'troubleshootings' ?

Thx

**PS:My "DEVICE MANAGER" has "Yamaha opl3 sound system", and there's NO funky exclamation mark there.

If you have installed no new software recently, then you should troubelshoot the hardware path. Check the leads going out to your speakers are still plugged in and haven't accidently come loose. Check that everything that should be plugged in still is.

sorry, but I should have mentioned it before..it's a Laptop that is showing this issue. So I would suppose that the leads for the speakers are plugged in and haven't come loose.

now there was 1 software installed(vdo codec), but then it was un-installed via the proper way.

any thoughts ?

Thx

When you bring up your volume control, if you go under Options and Properties, is it showing the proper mixer device?

Cheers,

Hi

the "Options and Properties",shows "OPL3-SA Mixer"[ the only choice in the drop down menu ] and my 'device manager' shows "OPL3-SAx sound system".....so I would guess they are the same..

still the sound of silence.

Thanks for any help

how about uninstalling the sound drivers and reinstalling them? See if that'll fix it...

Cheers

okay..I shall do it and let this Forum know of the results.

Thx

I 'removed' the sound system from the device manager, and re-started the computer. Windows detected 'an unknown device' and diligently installed the required drivers for the device. Windows booted up and I tried playing a CD.
No joy, there's no sound.

has it got to do anything with the registry here..?

Thx

No, reinstalling the drivers would have fixed that registry, which was the main reason I was suggesting that.

Ok, so let's try with the "obvious". Speakers still connected? Have you tried different speakers or headphones? Is the master volume up?

Other than that, I'm out of ideas right now... I'll let you know if I can come up with something else, or someone else in here can help I'm sure.

Cheers,

firstly a Thanks

ummm.any idea how does one check 'speakers connected' on a laptop ..I mean I have internal speakers ...so that's why this question(and all this time, I am taking that for granted).

Regarding Headphones, I shall give it a go.

Regarding "master volume", would that suggest the 'loudspeaker' icon on the task bar ? If so, then it's up, otherwise let me know.

Thx

Well, start by double clicking the speaker in your system tray and make sure that the MUTE is not checked for "MASTER" or for "WAVE".

If you do not see the "WAVE" volume control, go to OPTIONS -> PROPERTIES and put a checkmark beside "WAVE" so that this volume adjustment is visible.

Also the obvious, make sure the manual volume is turned up on the PC (some have a little wheel for volume adjustment like the ones on front of CD-ROM's).

Speakers muted in the BIOS perhaps?

Check those and let us know...

Cheers!

Okay...Thanks for this tip.
It's quiet late here now, so I shall try it tomorrow and let the forum know of the results.

Thx again

All

Firstly, sorry for the late reply.

Here's the result:

Headphone :- no joy, music CD is playing, sound dead. Headphone volume is MAX. [ headphone is a working headphone]
cd volume wheel on laptop turned to Max.

Regarding the tip:-"Well, start by double clicking the speaker in your system tray and make sure that the MUTE is not checked for "MASTER" or for "WAVE"."

I opened up the 'volume control' window and:-
vol control
CD audio
Wave
Synthesizer
line
Mono in
Microphone
Software WT
3D wide

all are equibalanced and NO[i repeat no]checkbox is checked in for "mute". all are wide open.

About the tip:-"Also the obvious, make sure the manual volume is turned up on the PC (some have a little wheel for volume adjustment like the ones on front of CD-ROM's)."

yes the wheel has been checked by turning it to the Maximum.

Regarding the Tip:- "Speakers muted in the BIOS perhaps?"

Good one, can someone pl. tell me how do I see this ?

Thx for all the Help so far.

Hi All,

just this last query from the above discussion, can someone point out how to check if the Laptop Speakers are muted in the BIOS on win 98 ?

This may be the clue and the resolution to the above anomaly.

Thx

It's a TOSHIBA Satellite 2520-series
300Mhz,64 MB Ram.

Thx

Ok, from Toshiba's website, here's how you access the BIOS:

Issue solution survey

This document provides information about how to access the BIOS settings on applicable models.

Procedure

You can access the BIOS settings on these models using any one of these 3 methods.

From the Windows Control Panel, launch the Toshiba HWSetup program. HWSetup provides a user-friendly graphical frontend for modifying BIOS settings. Please note that if you change some settings, you may be required to restart your computer. HWSetup comes preinstalled on your Toshiba portable PC, or it can be downloaded as part of the Toshiba Utilities package for your model.

Press the [Esc] key while the system processes its Power On Self Test (POST). In order to use this method, the computer must be "off", meaning not in sleep/suspend or hibernate mode. Press the power button, then immediately press the [Esc] key (it doesn't hurt to hold the key down). When the POST finishes, you'll be prompted to press the F1 key to enter BIOS setup. Press the [F1] key to access the BIOS setup program.

From MS-DOS, run the TSETUP program. TSETUP must be run under real mode DOS (not a Windows-based MS-DOS prompt) with no memory manager (like HIMEM.SYS, QEMM386, or equivalent) installed. TSETUP was provided originally with your computer, or you can download it from this Website

-----------------------------------

From there on, I'm not sure where you'd want to go to see if they were "muted" or not. I would guess that all you can do from there is enable/disable the sound card. If it was disabled, it would not appear in your Device Manager in windows.

Sorry buddy, that's as far as I can go. Hopefully you'll find something in the BIOS that can help you. Or maybe someone else can jump in and come up with another suggestion.

Cheers,
