I cannot get the "Add New Fonts" option to appear under "file" in the fonts folder.

I found a solution to this at windows.com. however it does not work. I am running win 98 on an HP 6545c. In a nut shell, the solution was to extract the fonttext.dll file from the cab files on the original 98 disk, and re-install the file. However, the "system files checker" cannot locate the cab files on the HP recovery disk. They are apparently in a file named "CAB.pak" on the recovery disk, but it will not recognize it as such.

I tried to do this from an old 95 upgrade disk, and it found and installed the files, however it did no good.

I have also tried doing this from the command prompt using the "ext" command, but had the exact same results. I am at a loss here. Can someone please help me out while I still have some hair left. :)

PS. I have also re-installed, at least attempted to re-enstall the desktop.ini file. Still a no-go.

If you're missing the original windows fonts, then it's (AFAIK) impossible without a reinstall. They're not anywhere on my CD either.
If you just want to add some fonts, extract them to the c:\windows\fonts folder, and a restart will make them visible. Cheers,
Jim

I wish it were that simple. I have restarted a dozen times trying to get the other so called "fixes" to work.

The problem is that I cannot get the fonts to register with other programs without the "Add New Fonts" option.

The fonts are in the folder, but they will not show up on in any programs, so they are useless.

I had a similar problem and the solution was to shut down to dos and type in a command-darned if I can remember what it was! It was something like atrib +fonts but this is almost certainly wrong. If that doesn't jog memories here check it out on microsoft's site, they have the answer. Andy.

Perhaps this saved post will help...

Hope this helps.....it worked for me -> nikko50

Actually, I was just told the dos command is
attrib +s +r c:\windows\fonts ... I don't know if this matters...

>:):O> correction.... the command on the support.microsoft.com site is 'c:\windows> attrib +s +r fonts' - meaining you open the command promp in dos and go to the windows directory and type in "attrib +s +r"(don't include the quotes).
