Hi all,

My set up is two PC's linked to one monitor and keyboard via KVMS. Out of the blue 1 pc froze the monitor.(a shuttle)

So I swaped all the harware over (video card, ram dvd drive, harddrives) and it all worked in the other machine - other than running the shuttle's c drive.

My conclusion then was that the mobo had died (on the basis that CPU's are robust and rarely peg out!)

So I purchased a new barebones shuttle - a sk43g - and I am no further on co's the fault hasn't gone away!

I've run the mobo with just ram and power, and it's not 'posting'.

The cpu is an amd athelonxp and I'm just wondering if it's died?

Ideas please.

Thanks.

Chriscb

Did you clear the cmos?

Hi Garebo - on which machine the original shuttle or the new one?

Hi,

yeh - cleared the cmos on the new one and also on the old one prior to buying the new one.

Lets deal with the new shuttle mobo first, i guess, since it is new.
Unplug power supply from the wall socket and hold the case power on\off switch in the on position for a full minute.
If power supply is out of the case just hold flat screwdriver on the 2 pins on the mobo that are for the on\off case switch.

If power supply is not out of the case take it out and set it up with only the barest minimum, power supply, mobo, keyboard, mouse (best if kbrd, mouse are ps2), video, i stick ddram or sdram, no nothing else. (If rd (rambus)ram you need 2 sticks of ram.)
Use flat tip screwdriver to touch the power on\off switch on mobo.
If that fails then pull the cpu. It seems you have a few different cpu's that you can try? Either way, make sure you have taken any original stock thermal tape off and cleaned cpu\heatsink well and applied new thermal paste.
Also, athlon xp's can be put on backward. Make sure the indented part of the heatsink is over the raised part of the cam\socket so that the heatsink\fan ends up totally level to the mobo.
Make sure you have read the manual and all jumpers are set where they should be.
Make sure you have cleared the cmos based on the mobo manual as they do differ, especially ECS mobos. Some mobos come with the jumpers pins in 2 and 3 position and have to be moved to pins 1 and 2 (ECS again).
Make sure the cpu fan is connected to the proper fan header on the mobo.

Try all the above with another mobo.

Hey ho, gone through the procedure above, and the result is still that I get no bootup or video output.

So I guess that one can conclude that the CPU is the faulty item - which is a real surprise as I thought that of all the hardware bits it could be, the CPU was the last on the list.

So it's off to the CPU shop on the 'morrow.

Thanks for your input.

The video, is it built in or via agp or pci? If its a slot, then perhaps try a different video card first.
Or a different ram stick.

Hi Garbo,

I have run the video card in another pc and it works ok, I've also swapped over the ram as well, the only item that hasn't been tested on a second mobo is the amd cpu.

In the new setup the monitor is conncected to the on board video as the card won't be recognised yet - the bios will have to be tweaked.

I thought it may be the KVM switch - which is around 3 years old now - but a third system ran OK when I powered it up and ran it through the switch, so it can't be the switch.

The least expensive item to replace is the CPU (amazingly enough) so I'll run with that and see what happens.

Thanks for your input.

Chriscb.
