Hi all,

I've just aquired a new server that I intend to use to replace a box that's about 4 years old. The existing server is running NW6 SP3 so my plan was to use the Migration Wizard to achieve this.

I've tried this once and it fails at the 'Begin NDS Migration' step. Basically it runs all the way through the process and then says it can't continue. When I look in the log files there is the following error:

- (DSBackupCreate Xfffffd60 - NDS error: You don't have sufficient rights to complete the requested operation. ) BACKUP.NDS was not created.

If you search for this in the knowledge base it instructs you to backrev your version of DS to pre-November 2002. So I copied the DS.NLM from the SP2 CD (which fits in with this date) and retried the step which failed with the same error. It may be worth mentioning that I'm using the migration wizard from the original NW6 CD.

As far as the servers themselves go:
Source:
NW6 SP3
Compaq Proliant ML370 R01
P3 733, 1Gb Mem

Destination:
NW6 SP3 (Pre-Migration type)
HP Proliant DL380 G3
P4 Xeon 2.8GHz, 1.5Gb Mem

Source OS Version: 6.0
Source DS Version: 103.20
Destination OS Version: 6.0
Destination DS Version: 103.20
(The above 4 lines are from the error log).

I guess my questions are:
1) Could someone point out if I'm doing wrong above? and
2) Is there a better way of doing the migration.

Thanks for your help.
Nigel Adams.

Reinstall the OS on your destination box using the New Server option. The Pre-Migration option has always been a bit buggy. If you dig deep enough, you can even find a Novell TID that tells you this too (didn't feel like searching).

Other than that, it looks like you are doing everything correct. I would want to ensure you are using the admin user and the admin user has ACL rights to root.

Did you get your volume copy to go alright? If you did, and all you need to do is get the NDS brain transplant done, there is another way. First off, do a backup of trustee rights using this faq57-4150 It was written for NW4, but will still work on NW6. From the new server, do an import of the schema from a remote tree (it is in DSREPAIR - ADVANCED - SCHEMA) Then use this move your DS database faq871-4066 There are two options, either one will work for you.

you need to use the up to date migration wizard

the original will stop at this point with above config

i've done this lots of time - even with same server types as you and works a treat

Never got a chance to say thanks for your help here, but I did use the Migration Wizard from 6.5 and got it to go through alright. I did have quite a few DS problems following this, (e.g. when users log in they map their drives correctly but the 'display results' screen shows something completely different) but generally it's all ticking along o.k.

Thanks again.
