I posted this in another forum and was told to post here instead.

Our entire system crashed last week and we called a company in to get us up & running again - however, they told us our system is old and they didn't know how to restore some of what we had before. The main problem is when the reception phone is not manned, we put the phones on nights so anyone in the office can pick it up. They cannot figure out how to set this up for us.

Once deployed, night service used to ring throughout the paging system & each individual telephone in the building. Anyone could pick up the phone just by picking up the handset or hitting handsfree, there was no codes or features required.

Since the crash, all it does is ring at the attendant desk and go straight to the AA after set number of rings. How can I set it up so it goes back to ringing at everyone's desk and anyone can pick it up?

I looked at the FAQ and did the ** 266344 but I don't have an option for Terminals & Sets which it sounds like I need. I also have no idea how to create a ringing group, is that something I need to do?

These techs have no idea how to fix it and are trying to sell us a new phone system which we don't really want.

It can be done, the people you hired are not qualified to work on your system otherwise they could get it to work.

Sorry to be so blunt. What area of the country are you in? Maybe I can recommend someone.

I'm in western Canada.

Thank you for your honesty, I knew they had no clue what they were doing I don't pay the bills around here but if we can find another company i can recommend it to the owner.

If you do not see Terms&Sets then you have older software/system.....you should then see Configuration.

If you want to give it a shot.....this is based on newer software so you may need to poke around see where it actualy is on older software:

Go into Services/RingingService/RingingGroup/01/Scan and add the exts you want to ring.
Add the lines that are to be in the group and say yes to Aux ring (overhead paging ring)

Go into Services/RingingService/SchedNight/ and change to Auto, press next until you see Line settings and add all your lines to group 01.

Go into Services/RingingService/CommonSettings/ControlSets/forLines and make it receptions DN for each line. This in case you want to override night service.

Go into Services/RingingService/CommonSettings/ScheduleTimes/ and change each day to 5pm or whatever you require.

Thank you curlycord!!! Most of those menu options I couldn't locate - different terminology or settings this old system has - but the ones I could decipher I was able to figure out how to set up each persons phone to ring while the service mode was turned on.

It doesn't ring on the speakers anymore, but that is okay as at least it rings at each person's desk who I put in the ringing group.

Bob3470 - I am in Calgary. The owners are looking at getting a new phone system unless we can find someone who can fix this the way we had it customized before.

Hi zzz,

We are a Calgary telephone company with extensive Nortel experience. Check out our website at and give us a call - we'd be willing to come out and have a look. If we can't fix it, we won't charge you.

Thank you for the website & information, the owner booked an appointment online and someone is coming in this afternoon. Hopefully our phone nightmares will be over for a while.
