Ok, what's the trick to installing MSDE? If I double click on the setup program, it tells me to run it from the command prompt with the SAPWD switch. If I run it there, it tells me to configure it from the Control Panel. I don't see any service running that the message might be referring to, so what gives?
I've checked the web and the only thread I could find said something about making sure that network connections where switched on (as the default after installation is off.)
BTW, I've installed the client tools (EM and QA) but that doesn't seem to have installed the database engine as I can't seem to register a server ie. it cannot connect to it.

Installing MSDE normally very easy from XP home or pro. We do it here constantly with 0 issues unless something is messed up with the OS. Sounds to me like that might be your problem.

Where are you getting your MSDE package from? Let me know, Ill check it out.

Off topic but what type of licensing issues do you have when using EM and QA with MSDE? We've been trying to figure out if and how we could legitimately use them with MSDE. Is there a place to download them from M$?

I managed to get the install to work. I'm not sure how, but I did.
Is there a license issue with EM? I have a license to put EM on a desktop to access SQLServer, don't I have the right to access MSDE? Hmm, I think I see your point. It's interesting though. You can put EM on as many desktops as you would like in order to access SQL Server, right?

Enterprise Manager and Query Analyzer come as part of the Standard, Enterprise and I believe Developer editions. Once you have a valid license to use one of those editions, you can use EM and QA to access ANY SQL Server database (including MSDE).
