i currently have a windows 2003 server, running exchange 2003, AD, and DNS....

i will soon be purchasing another win 2003 server, i would like to move the exchange to this new machine, and completly take it off of the old one, have the NEW server take over the name of the current machine, and rename the current machine....

here is my delima, ive been looking through many microsoft articles, all of which have the desclaimer

The instructions in this article assume that:
• The underlying processor platform is the same on the new server.
• The Exchange server is not a domain controller.

well mine is a DC....what do i need to be looking out for?

ultimatly i want to move the AD and DNS to another machine too, and totally re-set the old machine for another purpose, but right now i just want to get exchange on its own SOLE purpose machine, and keep ONLY AD and DNS on the old machine....

Why would you need the new machine to keep the same name?

You need to create the new XC server, move all the mailboxes and keep the old one up until all your Outlook users have logged in. They will automatically get repointed to the new server.

There is a very useful KB article by MS on removing the original XC server, although it doesn't address it's use on a DC. I forget the KB number but the title is something like "removing first or original exchange server in organization".
It's been mentioned many times in this forum.

822931 is the KB. It's the bible for moving to another Exchange server.

I'm with Neill - no need to have it be the same name. Migrate everything over, change the firewall to point to the new server. Follow 822931 religiously, and then leave Exchange running on the old server until all users have opened Outlook once.

but in outlook all the users are pointing to the name of the current exchange server, after the move i can change the name of the old server and IP (for the NAT), or should i just change the names and IP's after the initial move, and before the users start to work again

the move would take place starting the end of business day on friday and would just have to be finished by start on monday.....

Pay attention!

Install the new Exchange server with a new name and IP.
Move the mailboxes and follow kb 822931.

The first time Outlook is launched after a mailbox is moved, it will AUTOMATICALLY update itself to look to the new server.
