Need to move Exchange 2000 to a new server. Old server is Windows 2000, DC, call it ServerA. New server is Windows 2000, DC, call it ServerB. Exchange 2000 already loaded on ServerB. ServerA and ServerB will have different IP addresses. Once Exchange moved from ServerA to ServerB then ServerA will be decommissioned.

Only have about 20 exchange users. What is simpliest way to moved exchange information from ServerA to ServerB? What information needs to be moved?

Basspro,

How did you get on? i'm looking into a similar problem. Did you encounter any problems?

Cheers

Yeah, cheers mark!

Had a look at the FAQ and i'm still looking into it.

Paul,
It really depends upon your setup as to how you should proceed.

In my situation I set up a new server (W2K), joined the server to the domain, made the server a DC, installed Exchange, installed Exchange SP3, downloaded Exchange rollup updates. In my case the new Exchange server was in the same domain as the old server.

I then moved all users mailboxes via Active Directory to the new server. It is best to do this when no one is accessing Exchange (or at least that is what I have been told).

In my case I did not have any Public Folders so essentially at that point I was done.

When the users signed back on their email was redirected to the new server.

Thanks Basspro, did you have to point the user's outlook profiles to the new server name? How did that work?

Cheers

Paul,
In my case I did not have to do anything. If you are using IMAP then you should not have to do anything.

Hi!
I would suggest a couple of additional steps which will take some time but your migration to the new exchange server will be safer.
1.You've mentioned that you have only 20 mailboxes. If they are not very big I would also export them with ExMerge to pst files. That way you are going to have a copy of the users mailboxes, just in case somethingg happens during moving the mailboxes.
2.Create a replica of your public folders on the new Exchange and make sure that it replicates.
3.Configure a virtual SMTP server on the new exchange as you intend to decomission the old one.
4.If you have configured SMTP connector in your routing groups add the new virtual SMTP server to the servers allowed to send outbound e-mail.
5.If you have policies configured and applied to the mailbox store on the old server (like deleted mail retention policy) apply them to the Mailbox store on the new server too.
6.If you have antispam software configure it for the new SMTP server.

Hi Basspro,

After you did dcpromo, you just need to install exchange like you create new exchange server?
I have similar situation+public folder and I'm planning to do it next week, my old exchange is the first DC.

Thanks,
Winoto

winoto,
Yes, you would install Exchange on the new server. Be sure to install Exchange SP3 and the Microsoft rollup update for Exchange.

I changed mine over (actually two Exchange servers) about two weeks ago and everything has been going fine.

Thanks,

So, after Exchange is install, we move the mailbox one by one, I'm sure I'll need more that 1 week to do it. Do I need to create rule on my firewall or the email still go to the old machine and redirect it to new server? Do you need to do /domainprep also?

Thanks,

winoto,
1. Will the new server name and IP address be different than the existing server and and/or IP address?
2. How many mailboxes do you have?

If you read the link it says:

I did read the link; however, I do not believe winoto has stated whether this is an additional server or a replacement server. Depending upon the answer will determine which approach should be taken.

I am only relaying my own experience...
moving Exchange from old server to new server
keeping old server (but only as file/print server)
new server has a different name and IP address

Hi,

I've done it with 5.5 to 5.5 (same name and restore it from backup), this time I'm going to try another way because I don't want down time.

Thanks,
Winoto

Another reason:
The old one is DC. If everything goes well, it's OK but if there is something wrong with the new one, I have to bring the old one back.

basspro, the topic of the thread is "Move Exchange 2000 to new server" with the focus on 'MOVE' and 'NEW', so if winoto has something else in mind, he should start his own thread.

marcs41,
Since I started the thread I assume I know what my intention was. As I stated in my original post move Exchange from ServerA to ServerB. Different server names, different IP addresses. Once move had been accomplished and all went well then and only then decommission ServerA.

Thus your link to moving Exchange to a new server and keeping the same server name was NOT what I intended to do.

Do not want to get into word games. I thought the intent here was to help and since winoto seemed to have a similar siutation to what I went through I was willing to related my experience. Please note that every time I posted I set the criteria that I have explained before.
