Modem error: unable to support current country setting

I thought I would post this here as well as the Motorola SM56 modem forum (it gets little traffic). This may be a Win2K issue - registry or something. There is little info on it when I do a search across the internet - and mostly the sites with info are in Polish and Russian!

I keep getting the error: “unable to support current country setting ....” when FAXing. Then the dialog box tells me to reset to USA in the Motorola SM56 modem application in the tray. But it is already set to the USA. This comes up every time, even after changing to another country, rebooting and changing back to the USA and rebooting again! The Motorola SM 56 properties box comes up and I close it, this happens twice before it’s OK, till the next time I send a fax. This has only just come up upon updating my modem drivers to the latest driver set. Now all the features of my modem are employed, but I get this annoying problem. The modem keeps working and sending FAXES in the background despite this error message - it’s mainly annoying and a royal pain. Any help is appreciated.

Have you tried changing over and using the standard modem driver proved by WIndows. This modem is outdated and there will be new drivers for it.

I have been going nuts for the last week or so with the same error message - you gave me a clue when you mentioned the latest driver. This has been happening since Windows Update installed a new driver not long ago.

What is strange is that I have only actually used the modem once in that time, so far as I know (to submit date to my DSL carrier), but the message appears fairly often and randomly.

Any suggestions?

Len

Windows Updates have been crazy lately. Here is a link to the drives for that modem reinstall the driver and see if that will help. In my last post I should have said there will NOT be any more driver updates. Do try to reinstall and set what happens. Post back

The driver I installed was from The Most up to date driver from Windows update was OK, but did not support all the feature that the modem has. As I said, the modem actually works in the background despite the messages. I don't think it's the actual modem use that promts the dialog, rather it might be somthing to do with querying the modem or something. I haven't tried to remove the tray program - maybe that's the culprit?

Downloading and installing the correct driver from the Motorola softmodem page worked.

In my case I had to use the legacy driver set for my pci modem:
Windows 2K DFV/PCI 84.40 1.9MB W2K_DFV_PCI_84.40.exe

Thanks,

Len

I fixed the problem. I saw that modem Junkie used the PCI driver - I was using the latest universal driver since it sounded like what I needed. Turns out I also needed the DFV/PCI driver - version 84.40. Now after removing the old driver and reinstalling the correct one everything seems to work. Strange that the modem worked almost without problems with the wrong driver! I did have some problems with voice messaging - but I thought it was the software. Faxing worked fine.

Thanks.

Good job thanks for the answer back. Maybe we pointed you in right direction thanks modemjunkie

Yes, You pointed me in the right direction.

I tried the universal driver, too, and when it didn't work, I explored further and found the PCI drivers.

Thanks,

Len

Well.... I'm not happy. I installed the PCI driver and no matter what I did my answering maching software would not answer the phone. I tried 4 different programs and nothing. I can FAX, dial out (and talk through the microphone), dial out and connect to my free dial-up service. But no answering.

I tried to use windows update to try for another driver, and it put in one that causes the unable to support current country setting! So I went into the registry and started removing anything about the modem. Unfortunately I took out something that I needed and wrecked my registry. Windows no longer booted, and I could not restore the registry. I ended up reinstalling Windows into another directory, logging in and backing up my Winnt file, reinstalling Windows over the Winnt directory, then moving files back from the backed up Winnt files - except for the corrupt registry, then importing my backed up registry and making some registry changes - like pointing back to my old settings - default user, and all user, etc. I had to reinstall a couple programs, but overall most everything works like it did.

Now I'm about to buy a new modem. I'm thinking of the Creative Blaster - Fax / modem - plug-in card - PCI - 56 Kbps - V.90, V.92. First I'll check on all the connections in the machine. But I think the Motorola is crap - and without any real support I'm fed up with it!
