Is it safe or even usable to untar the stable.tar.gz from the curent version of perl from perl.com in a directory on a virtual server and use that perl instead of the /usr/bin/perl on my server. I've got a virtual and my host refuses to upgrade, so is it possible to install the latest version myself but without getting into trouble and effecting many other perl users on the server? I mainly need the features which were out definatly by version 5.005_03 of the perlcc compiler. Plus there were some bug fixes that prevent me from doing certain regexes with the version they run (5.004_04).

Thanks,
Tony "Java?? Umm, I think that's the stuff I drink while I'm coding perl."

Hi Tony,

Yes -- you can specify the target directories for a new install of perl when you run Configure, I do this all of the time when upgrading to a new version of Perl. Install to a non-standard directory and test my important scripts agains the new version. --- if your host will let you do that of course. Mike

Email welcome if you're in a hurry or something -- but post in tek-tips as well please, and I will post my reply here as well.

Great news Mike, I'm glad to hear it can be done and still function.

As for my host ... who cares, they don't even know how to add a mime type.

Tony
