Hello,
I have a Windows 2000 Active Dir server managing my whole domain.
I recently bought a new server and installed Windows 2003 Server.
I have made it a DC and promoted it to Global Catalog Server. I have demoted the old 2000 server from being a GC, but it is still a DC.
I now want to switch the old server off completely but I need to get DHCP and DNS working on the new 2003 server.
What is the best method for doing this?
The old server needs to be totally wiped and re-installed as a backup DC elsewhere. So I need the PCs to look only at the new 2003 server for their DHCP and DNS.
Any ideas how this can best be achieved?
Many thanks,
T

Duplicate your scope for DHCP on the new server but don't activate it. Then turn off DHCP on the old server and activate your scope on the new server.

If your DNS is AD Integrated, then you should already have DNS running on the new server.

Hello,
DNS is not running on the new server.
There's a DNS client, but no server.
Should I install this? But how do I get it to communicate with the existing server? They will need to run parallel with each other for about a week before I turn the old one off.
Thanks
T

SDwitch your DNS on the old server to AD integrated and it should then automatically configure as aprt of the same zone on the new server since it is a DC. If for some reason it does not you might want to try running DCPROMO on it again (twice) to make it a DC again so it will see the AD Integrated zone.

You could avoid this by manually installing, but honestly I think it is easier to let AD do all of the configuration for you.

I hope you find this post helpful. Please let me know if it was.

Hello,
Thanks for the advice.

I have opened DNS and and in the Forward Lookup Zone opended the properties for our "domain.company.local"

In the General Tab I changed the Type by clicking the checkbox "Store the Zone in Active Directory..."

Is this the right way to do it?
If so then does this automatically install DNS on the new AD server, since they are both DCs?

Many thanks. T

That is the correct way to change to AD Integrated. I've only added DCs AFTER having dome the integrated zone, so I am not 100% positive that it will install ont he other server but I believe it should when AD synchronizes.

I hope you find this post helpful. Please let me know if it was.

Hello,
Sorry for the reply in answering
This did not entirely work on its own.
I did need to install the DNS service from the 2003 CD and then it worked fine.
Because I switched it to DNS on the old server, the new installation worked immediately, fully integrated.
Many thanks for your help
