I have a Definity G3si release 11 PBX with Carriers A through E. I also have an 2 additional port carriers (EPN)2A and 3A. Currently I have 13 T1 cards. I want to add another 5 T1s for(inbound toll for emergencies) and have the space for them but was told that I am past my maximum and need to add another EPN for load balancing. Is this true? Is there anything else I can do without adding the expense of another EPN?

Hi,
I'am not a specialist but i post same question few month ago.

Normally : No more 8 DS1 by port Network(PN). Or no more 243 calls by PN regarding time slots capacity

A port network is an cabinet (or a stack of EPN connected by a flat ribon cable) connected to other cabinet by a fiber link.
Normally, you should have as example 01a0x for PN 1, 02a0X for PN 2.
Hope i'am right and i can help you

So in essence, I have 3 port networks, I have 1A 1B 1C 1D and 1E and then I have an EPN labeled 2A and then another EPN labeled 3A. The 3A EPN is in another telecom room connected by fiber. So, I really can't use that EPN to add the additional T1s since that is used for station trunks in that building. That makes sense then.
Thanks!

PhoneK,

G3si has the capacity to handle 30 DS1 cards...The system will not let you exceed that number. It is recommended that you not have more than 8 DS1 cards per carrier...vamosalavaya is correct in the number of calls that can be processed on the TDM bus, however I thought the number was 256 calls, not 243, but that is not that many. If you have the ability spread out the DS1 boards in your other PNs, I would do that, if not this will still work. I had an G3si, in an MCC, that had 4 carriers, and I was running 29 DS1 boards in the box. We had an autodialer that had DS1 lines connected as line side T-1's, and I was told by 2 BP's and Avaya that it wouldn't work, and it ran for 3+ years before we needed to upgrade. I was able to make it last a lot longer than anyone thought, and I had absolutely, NO problems with it. I hope this will help you, but I would add the DS1 boards, and I would spend a nickel on anything else...

512 Timeslots
- 28 used for system resources

484 Available timeslots for calls

242 Simultanious full-duplex calls per PN

Not 241, not 243 and not 256 (with one exception that pre release 6 (if I remember well) needed 29 timeslots for system resources which leaves you with 241 simultanious calls)

This means a max of 8 E1's or 10 T1's (roughly) per PN to have a NON Blocking system.

Of course blocking depends on the load on the system/backplane. Do you need non-blocking or can you live with a blocking system ? You can have 20 E1's in one PN without having blocking. All depends on the load.

PhoneK,

It's not because you didn't had any problems (are you sure about this, did you monitor backplane capacity ?) that this is valid for other systems. It really depends on the traffic you will be generating.
