I have a Sound Blaster CD-ROM (CR-563),& am using Win95. I can't seem to get my Config.sys & Autoexec.bat files setup with either; 1.) the correct drivers or 2.) everything in the proper order or 3.) both 1 & 2. I have a Sound Baster 16 sound card that the CD-ROM attaches to, the sound card is setup and running properly. The system detects the CD-ROM,the light blinks when it should and it's even been assigned a drive letter. In Device Mngr. there's the yellow exclamation warning next to the CD-ROM Controler driver and under properties for it it says,"all of the drivers are not loaded, or the device is not installed correctly, or it's not even there." There's no conflicts and I am sure it's installed properly . Under the Performance tab it tells me I have a device using a real-mode driver & something about being in MS-DOS Compatibility mode. When I rem out the line with the MSCDEX driver in my Autoexec.bat file the message goes away. Throughout all of this when I try to use the CD-ROM I get," Drive is not ready." The light comes on but that's about it. I think I just need to know exactly which drivers I should be using and the proper way to put them in my Config & Autoexec files. Upgrading is not an option. I would be forever gratefull to anyone who can help me get my CD-ROM up and running again.

                      tarowcjd

Normal installation of CDR on 95 doesn't require entries in config.sys or autoexec.bat.
They are required for DOS applications. Can't remember the SB16 setup, but think there was a separate setup for the CDR controller on the card but that may have been for w3.1.
What version of 95 are you running? I'm reading between lines here and suspecting a W95 upgrade version from disk. And if that is correct, then the entries in AE & config are carryforwards from AE & config from the previous dos files of the same name, which 95 will show as filename.dos on the root directory.
Don't let W95s file renaming confuse you.
Ed Fair

What you need to try is rem out all the references to the CD-rom in autoexec.bat and config.sys, you should not need them. Second, goto the device manager and remove the cd-rom then shut down windows, don't restart. Open the case and attach the cd-rom to the same cable as your hard drive, there should be an extra space on the ribbon to attach another device like a cd-rom to it. Make sure that your cd-rom is set as slave. Once this is done, start the computer and windows should autodetect your cd-rom. If it does, it probably will ask for the win95 cd-rom or diskettes. If you get to your desktop, goto device manager and make sure there are no exclaimation marks. If there are not any then your drive should work, so test it out.

hope this helps....

fenris
fenris@hotmail.com

I am assuming you know that this CD ROM is a 2X Panasonic.
Now for the really bad news. I am willing to bet that it isn't even an IDE CD ROM, and that the sound card isn't even plug n play. This alone precludes you from running off the Windows driver (I assume edfair thought it was an IDE drive and would be correct in pointing out that it would then NOT require a line in the Config file for Windows useage).
Dude, you are banging your head against the wall, and the wall is gonna win!
My best advice to you is to open that wallet of yours and spend the whole forty dollars or so and get a cheap CD ROM. Trust me, it will be worth the hassle and frustration.
Al
atc-computing@home.com

Al, depends on the version of 95. Drivers are built into B & C if I remember correctly. And the port was IDE but it needed to be enabled. Will pull one out of storage tomorrow to verify. Think I tested it with 95C and 98 before I racked it. And it may have some conflicts with an onboard port.
Ed Fair

The early SB 16 came with a proprietary CDROM port which was not IDE. Being that the CDROM is a 2X, I assume it to be VERY early. Creative did later integrate an IDE port onto the card (or multiple interfaces) as many early ISA and VLB controller cards offered only one IDE port.
Al
atc-computing@home.com

Al,
Pulled stock to check. Mine were both IDE. I remember a 20 or 22 pin special interface but I thought it was limited to earlier versions , not SB16, which came later in the design cycle. So the question is "What interface does he have"?
Were I in the same position, I would go to a later CD and a later sound card. Together the price shouldn't be more than about $70.00. I'm paying $18.00 for sound cards and $42.00 for CD. But this is also dependent on what hardware is in his machine.
ed
Ed Fair

Thank you all for your time & trouble,it's greatly appreciated. Al you hit it right on the head about the wall winning, I installed an old Mitsumi and it only took about 10 min. and I once again had a working cd-rom.
I believe there was something wrong with the cr-563. I know it has to have drivers loaded through Config & Autoexec because I tried remming out the lines in each file (one at a time) awhile back out of curiosity. Someone also told me it had something to do with the SB Soundcard being part of a kit with the cd-rom, and there is a proprietary interface on it for the driver. I did try connecting it to the same cable as my hard drive to no avail. Which leads me to another question.
I currently have the Mitsumi connected to the same cable as my hard drive, really would rather not have though because I have read in a few different books that doing so causes your system to really slow down. My question is," Is there any truth to that?" I definately notice a much slower response when using the cd-rom drive now but as it's an older used 6x I don't know if that's what the problem is or from sharing the hard drive cable??
I'm afraid I'm not able to go out and just buy a new cd-rom right now so I have to make do with what I have. Thanks again for the great input.
            tarowcjd

(by the way I'm a she person)

Ok she-person,
There really should be no signifigant performance hit from sharing the cable. If your controller has 2 IDE ports, by all means use the other for the CD ROM. Also don't forget that multiple hard drives will often master/slave off the same cable without performance complaints.
6X is slow compared to what's available now. Should be faster that that old 2X, and the IDE interface should provide for better bandwidth than the proprietary SB int.

Happy waiting!
Al
atc-computing@home.com

Welcome to the world of the "Flat Heads". Get that way by continuously beating our heads against walls. If you have pentium system with PCI slots I'd advise replacing the sound card with a PCI version as a first step. Will remove any possibility of IDE controller address conflict.
How about a system description? And a W95 version? Stuff loads differently depending on hardware and version.
Ed Fair
