A little background on the issue. I recently moved from a Dell OptiPlex GX1 (PII, 450MHz) running Windows NT 4.0 Workstation (SP6a) to a Dell OptiPlex GX260 (P4, 2GHz) running Windows 2000 Professional (SP3). When I was running Windows NT 4.0, I could map local shares to other PC's just fine using a DNS name or an IP Address...and I did this quite regularly to pass files between PC's. Now with the new PC, Windows 2000 Pro does not let me connect to anything. Not Windows NT 4.0 Workstations, Windows 2000 Professional, or our Linux share. We know for a fact the userID's and passwords are correct. I just get the following error message: The network path XXX cannot be found.
I used Ethereal to do a packet capture, and it appears as if the Windows 2000 Professional machine is trying to use Microsoft Directory Service to connect rather than NetBIOS. I see the machines reset (RST) these connections and ACK (acknowledge) it all over again. We don't run any domains...just straight up Workgroups.
Let me know if you had this problem, I'll provide more information if needed.
