Our company installed a Cisco switch, and all the computers that accessed the NT Server, could not connect to the NT Server. All the machines are windows 95 and 98. We had to instal lmhosts file on every machine to fix the problem. We did this on a about 50 computers so far. There's about 30 computers left. Does anybody know what we didn't configure properly on our switch or NT Server? We had switches (not Cisco) in here before, and we did't have problem connecting to the NT Server. And all the computers are on a LAN and not a WAN. Yes on our WAN we had to install lmhosts file. But I dodn't see why we cannot connect to NT Server without the lmhosts file.

A consultant installed the switch. And I don't have a clue what he did. I am a programmer, and all my programs talk to the NT server. Another problem we have now, that we never had is, we have reboot computers until it connects to the NT server. The compuers connect to the Novell servers fine. Any help would be appreciated.

Not much of a consultant to leave a customer hanging in the breeze like this.

The switch needs to be checked for autonegotation of the ports. Number one problem is either the wiring or NICs will not work right with it enabled. A simple fix is to lock all the ports of the switch into 10 1/2 at first to stablize the situation. Once this is done, pick a test connection and enable 10 full.. if that works, take it to 100 half.. if that works go to 100 full. Check each time to make sure the network connection really does work. I found many times that with old NT4 drivers and questionable wiring that 100 half is the best choice.

The actual changing of the port speed/duplex will cause a port reset each time so do this off hours or on a test box. It takes less then 20 minutes to go through all the tests.

I agree with wybnormal. Another thing you should do is to disable spanning tree on all the ports used for server and PC connection. Might help.

Good luck :)
