A Lexar JumpDrive (256MB) is automatically and correctly recognized by Windows XP Pro SP2 when connected to a rear USB port on my PC, but fails to be recognized when connected to a front USB port. A SanDisk Cruzer Mini (1GB) flash drive is correctly recognized, however, on both the front and rear USB ports.

All USB ports have passed hardware tests performed by two diagnostic utilities (PC-Doctor and Fix-It Utilities).

As a consequence, I infer that:
* The Lexar JumpDrive is not defective, since it does work when connected to the rear USB port (and with other PCs).
* The USB front port is not defective, since it passes the hardware diagnostic tests and the SanDisk Cruzer Mini flash drive works in it.
* Therefore, if the problem is not the JumpDrive device and is not the USB port, then it would suggest that the issue is a configuration/driver problem of some kind.

All suggestions and troubleshooting recommendations are appreciated!

I had kind of the same problem.
My laptop is an ASUS Windows XP Professional.
It seems like the ASUS bootup disks has overwritten certain files that the Lexar Jumpdrive needed. So I took my computer back to where I bought it. They reformatted the harddrive with original Windows XP Professional CD's and not the bootup disks ASUS provides.
My Lexar Jumpdrive now works. I didn't have front and back USB ports though.

I hope this helps.

I have the same problem on a Dell PC at work with my Lexar 1GB jumpdrive. At first it worked in the front USB port and now it doesn't, but it has always worked in the back USB port. I'm assuming it stopped work on the front port after a windows update or something. When i have time I'm probably gonna run SFC or CHKDSK to see if that changes anything.
Or delete the USB ports from the device manager and reload the drivers.
We have several Dell Dimension 2400 PC and this problem is only on mine.

According to Lexar, "In some computers, JumpDrive works in the rear USB ports but not in the front USB ports. This is because there is no physical connection present between the JumpDrive and the USB port in the front end of the computer. You can also use an USB extension cable to access this JumpDrive on the front end of the computer."

Indeed, attaching the JumpDrive to a USB extension cable connected to the front USB port works.

Thanks Pleonasm,
I wish I would of tried that before I got them to reformat my hard drive.
