is TCP port 1433 secure or should I use other ports?
 
Put it this way....EVERYONE, including hackers, know that the default port for SQL Server is TCP 1433.

where do you configure to use a different port? Can you use any number that is not already taken?
 
This must be done on the server hosting the SQL Server instance.

Using Enterprise Manager, right click on the instance.
Select Properties.
On the General Tab, click on Network Configuration.
In that window, go to General tab.
In the right pane, you should see TCP/IP, highlight that.
Click Properties.
You can change the Port there.

Make sure you change it on all client connections (ODBC).
