Is anyone connecting an XP client through a router to a RV082?

I have an RV082 (currently static IP on DSL, soon to be dynamic on cable) talking to a BEFVP41 (dynamic IP cable) with no problems keeping the link alive (batch job at one end regularly pings the other every hour).

However, I have had no luck setting up 2000/XP clients to VPN to the either router. These clients will be behind regular Linksys routers, such as the BEFW11S4. Is it possible with the built in 2000/XP IPSec policy to set up a tunnel to one of these or should I look at some third party software clients? I would prefer the connection to the RV082 since it supports VPN groups rather than setting up specific tunnels.

I have seen a few similar post, but none never seemed to be resolved.

Michael,

Check out:
Look under Interop Samples > Microsoft VPN Client.

This grad student in Taiwan has had this stuff working for months. Note: I don't think the Microsoft VPN Client supports connecting to anything other than a static IP Address. So you may also want to check out the SafeNet client setup on the same site.

Thanks for the link. There is a lot of good info there. Linksys support could probably learn a thing or two from that guy.

Since I posted this, I found someone who posted some VBScript for configuring the XPclient side. I am going to try and modify it a bit and see if I can get the VBScript to ping the dynamic IP side's Dynamic-DNS host name and parse the IP out into a variable that the other guys script can read. If I get that working, I will post it here.

On a side note, looking at his RV082 to BEFVP41 config, he used the email address authentication method as I did. That was the only way I could get those to two to talk (after several hours and a lot of hair loss).

Michael,

I agree that you must use the e-mail address version of connection, as well as Agressive mode, if your remote gateway is on a dynamic IP. I failed to mention it since the VPN Log of the RV082 pretty much tells you as much once you start trying to connect the tunnel.

So far, I've had absolutely no problems connecting to a BEFSX41 (firmware 1.45.7) on a DynDNS FQDN using the Agressive Mode/E-mail type connection with the RV082 (firmware 1.1.1). Very stable and it worked the first time I tried.

I would expect that your attempts with BEFRVP41 should work just as easily. More so, in fact, since you've got hardware accelerated encryption on both ends.
