R5.1 calls cannot connect. I can call my cell, my home and my main number, but cannot call another IP Softphone. Both just sit with no sound or voice. Did I miss anything when setting up the h.323 stations? Both are Road Warrior configs. They work great for VoIP to TDM but not VoIP to VoIP. Could it be a port issue? Do I need a H.323 turnk/signal group? I am on R11. I am stumped.

In the future everything will work...

Check the Network regions that the IP Softphones belong to and ensure that the ip-codecs have a matching codec to use when using communicating between network regions.

You can do a list trace on the station to verify what is causing the issue, it should point out a codec mismatch.

Thank you,
VOIPEng

does the other phone ring when you call it? just no voice-path? Are both phones on the same VLAN/subnet? do you/your Network Admin allow for direct IP-to-IP connections between the 2 VLAN's the phone might be on?

There was a codec mismatch

In the IP codec set form add the following codecs:
G.729A
G.723-6.3

Based on the settings that the IP Softphone is using (the drop down for LAN connection, DSL/Cable, or Dial UP) define which IP Codec that the IP Softphone will use. If you add the above codecs to the codec set, you will not have this problem with IP softphones again.

Thanks,

Thank you,
VOIPEng

I added G.729A and G.723-6.3K. I am going to do some test and see what codec comes up.

In the future everything will work...

Well I added the codecs...but still no dice. I when logged in both exts can call out to the PSTN and can call via ARS (9-XXX-XXXX)the ext DID. For what ever reason...not ext to ext while both are logged in. If one longs out the call is fine.

In the future everything will work...

Do a 'list trace station ####' while trying to make the call, and paste the output on here.

Thank you,
VOIPEng

You need to play around with hair pinning. Basically you need to be in different network regions and because you are using NAT translation at home, you need to turn "Intra-Region Direct IP-IP" set to know on the region where your external IP phones are sitting. Make sure set the regions to talk to each other as well. Try that

mrjedi...In the Intra Region field it shows four options. Yes, No, Native (NAT) and Translated(NAT). How do I reference two network regions. If there ANY documentation on this? I know the gateway IP of the External IP phones...

In the future everything will work...

you must set it in the "change ip-network-map" and put the region number 2 in there. Then you must make sure each network region can talk to each other, "change ip-network-region" page 2 and on page one set "Intra-Region Direct IP-IP" set to No. Try that. Thats what the document says.I have not tried it before.

Where are these 2 softphones located, I highly recommend that you start with the 2 IP Softphones on the same subnet and test, this way you can verify if it is a network or PBX issue. Once both IP softphones are in the same subnet they will be in the same network region, so you will not have to worry about inter-region issues.

Thank you,
VOIPEng

They are both on the same subnet. I turned Direct IP to IP to no on the ip-network-region page and on the station page. They work on the LAN but not through the VPN. I can make calls out and recieve calls from the pstn. As soon as I call another ext logged into a softphone...no audio.

In the future everything will work...

according to the docs, you need to separate the remote IP phones on a different network region and set the option to "no" only on that region. Post your email address and I will send the document.

So everything is fine internally, it is only when you use the laptops remotely?

Thank you,
VOIPEng

Yep, remotely...

In the future everything will work...

AH HA!!! So I turned Direct IP to IP off and the call connected with Audio. Now...how do I set up Direct ip to ip "shuffling" when on the lan. The ip range on the lan is 170.XX.XXX.XXX. When we VPN, the ip range is 172.XX.XXX.XXX.

In the future everything will work...

The following guide thoroughly outlines how to setup different network regions and how to setup codecs to enable the best utilization of your WAN resources. It will enable you to have IP Softphones use G.711 (high codec on your network) and using Direct IP-IP and hairpinning when on the LAN and when on the VPN use G.729 and disable Direct IP to IP.

Hope this helps

Thank you,
VOIPEng

we have had a similar problem with a cust using an Avaya IP Office as the Gateway , looks like it is a problem with direct media path on the IP Hardphone

the only solution so far is to disable direct media path :-(

You happen to have a doc on 1.3? Unless there isnt a difference between CM1.3 and 2.0.

In the future everything will work...
