Hi I have a school with an IP Office IP500 and a Voicemail Pro.
They would like to have any call to 911 recorded 'automatically'. They can't count on the user to manually activate ' Call Recrding'. and they don't want to record all calls.

I assume there is something that can be done through short codes to... please advise.

Thanks!

why do you want to recors the 911 call ?
the call is already recorded by the 911 central

Women and cats can do as they please and men and dogs should relax and get used to the idea!

The school wants to record a copy of the 911 call.

The 911 center usually does not let the callers have a copy of their recording.

The 911 center usually does not let the callers have a copy of their recording." - For good reason. I think your monitoring and or recording peoples' calls to the emergency services will have the lawyers rubbing their hands with glee. If I think you abused a pupil and I want to report it I don't want you to know, blunt but true.

If its a problem with false 911 calls then find another way. The normal call logs will tell you where and when without getting into the risky area of what was said.

ps. I don't think you abused anyone but I just want to highlight the very sensitive nature of non-emergency persons recording emergency calls.

Ask who want to records the calls (The School is a bit general) and why (the real reason)?

The question was of a technical nature, not a moral or legal one.

School administration usually has the teachers call the office so the Principal iknows what is going on in their shcool. This would speed up care to a needy person rather than asking for a third party to call 911. Also the 911 center can ask the caller for pertinant information about the emergency and get better information than hearing it second hand.

Hmm. My wife's a teacher, so I can relate. But as a phone guy, I have a different take. Why not just instruct the teacher/person to CALL 911 in an emergency. After giving the information to the 911 call center, call the pricipal.

Then, the emergency is dealt with as quickly as possible, by the closest person. The information is provided both to the emergency call center and the school administration by the person with the most information.

From a technical standpoint, I think you could do what you wanted, but from a lgeal standpoint, you might get yourself (and the school) into trouble.

Do you only think, that it is possible or do you KNOW that it is possible?

Isn't it a legal requirement in the US to have E911 is schools ? I am UK based, but did a phone system course in the US where this was mentioned. If this is the case, having the principal call the emergency services subverts this!

Take Care

Matt
If at first you don't succeed, skydiving is not for you.

You "could" populate the telephone number field for shortcode 911 with a user that is forwarded to 9911. This user could have recording turned on. I haven't tested this and personally, I wouldn't mess with 911.
