How do I install a TCP/IP printer on a windows 2000 server machine and share it to NT 4.0 clients? Here is what I have done:

I installed the printer (epson stylus color 1520) on the 2000 server as a local printer using the win2k driver from the epson website. I specified 'Standard TCP/IP port' and set it to the ip of the printer. I can print a test page from the 2000 server machine. When I go the printer properties, then Sharing | Additional Drivers and specify 'Intel Windows NT 4.0 or 2000' it asks me for the Windows 2000 Server CD. I put that in and it says 'The printer driver you selected is either not compatible with your current version of Windows, or it may not be available. Select a compatible driver from the list, or contact your administrator for help.' Any ideas? Thanks!

Your best bet at this point would be to uninstall the driver you have now and re-install using the driver that windows 2000 has for this printer. That might solve your problem. And I have checked: Windows 2000 SP3 has the Epson Color 1520 driver in windows.

Tried installing the windows driver '1520 ESC/P 2' as well as the epson driver '1520' to no success. Both win2k drivers work, it's the NT 4.0 driver that I can't get to install.

The Windows NT printer driver should work on the 2000 server and it will definately work on the NT machine.

Just add the new printer to NT machine, then you will be asked for the location of the drivers. The use the supplied driver from Epson to your NT4 machine. Don't try to install the NT driver on your 2000 machine. This works for me...

NT 4 printer drivers work with 2000 Server and Professional.
I have been using the systems that way for 2 years now. I have done it this way because some printer manufacturers did not make drivers for Windows 2000.

The NT drivers installed on the win2k machine and the nt machine was able to add the printer share. Now comes the reason why we were doing all of this.

We are trying to print postscript files from the NT machine using GSView. Historically, they printed through an NT server machine an epson stylus color 1520 via tcp/ip. That server was upgraded to 2000 and up till two months ago we could print ps files with no problem. Now we are unable to print the files and are trying to get it working again.

Word documents and other non-ps files print fine. Any ideas? Thanks everybody!

Could it be possible that this GSView program needs and upgrade or possibly one of the printing preferences is set wrong. Just an idea. Maybe a re-install might in order. Sometimes when you upgrade, Registry settings go south on you.

yeah, we tried different versions of gsview before. now that we solved the print-thru-server problem, we can try those options again. thanks!
