I have a CSV file with several hundred email addresses that I would like to import into Outlook as a distribution list. Does anyone know how to do this?

What version of Outlook are you using? The following is for Outlook 2000 (note - it may take a bit of time as you state you have several hundred names). Sorry if the instructions are overly detailed but I don't know how much experience you have using Outlook.

1. Create a new contacts folder (to keep these email addresses separate from any others you may have in your default contacts folder). Make sure it you say it contains Contact items
2. Click file ->import and export
3. When the Import and Export Wizard pops up select Import from another program or file
4. Click Next and select Comma Separated Values (Windows)
5. Click Next and browse to the .csv file you want to import and select how you want duplicate items to be dealt with.
6. Click Next. Select the destination folder (the one you created in step 1)
7. Click Next and then click finish.

Your CSV file has now been imported into a new Contacts folder.

To create a distribution list from the new contacts folder information:

1. Go to your new Contacts folder
2. Click on Actions then select New Distribution List (or go Ctrl+Shift+L)
3. Give the distribtion list a name
4. Click on Select Members
5. Select the your new Contacts folder from the drop down menu (where it says "show names from the:")
6. All the names in your new folder will show up in the left hand pane of the Select Members window.
7. Select the first name on the list, hold the shift key down, and select the last name on the list. Click the Add button.
8. Click OK.
9. Clck Save and Close.

You will now see the distribution list in the same Contacts folder as the names that were used to create the list.

Hi dgillz

Cmeagan656's instructions look excellent.

Also, you can avoid importing the addresses first if you can arrange to capture the email addresses to the clipboard. Then you just use cmeagan656's steps 1 thru 4 in creating the distribution list, but when you get to the point of Select Members, right click on the empty members pane, select paste and the email addresses you have on the clipboard will be pasted into the distribution list.

That will save you having to set up a contacts folder and import the addresses if you don't need them as separate contacts.
