Hello! I have just acquired an RS/6000 machine. It is an E30 and has a PowerPC CPU(133Mhz). I am trying to install Windows NT 4 on it. The HCL for NT4 lists this system as being tested and fully functional. I am able to navigate the system management menus and select the CDROM or Floppy as the default boot device. I have installation media for both. However, the unit refuses to boot from either of these and simply defaults back to the hard drive. I know the media is good as I can boot from it in multiple other machines. Do I have to do anything special to boot from these media since this machine has a different architecture?

Although NT4 had support for PowerPC architectures, it is NEVER been a supported OS on the RS/6000 platform. The RS/6000 only supports AIX (and maybe Linux in an LPAR -- don't know for that particular model).

I agree with itsp1965, have not seen NT run on a RS/6000. Also to note the PowerPC is an RISC processor. So if it is on the HCL, as my old NT 4 memory servers, you should be using the version of NT 4 for the Alpha processor.

In the HCL that came in the box with NT4, it plainly lists my server (7024-E30) under the heading of PowerPC as being completely supported. I've gotten as far as knowing I need an ARC disk so I can boot from the NT cdrom. I've acquired the disk images, written them to floppy, instructed the machine to boot from the floppy, but it hangs about half way through booting from the disk. I never get any farther than the server saying "Loading Operating System". Any other ideas? As mentioned, the HCL clearly lists the exact model I have to be supported and tested for the PowerPC architecture.

I looked at the URL and Don't see your model(7024-E30). They are talking about notebooks and thinkpads? Sorry I could not assist with your issue, but when you get it working would you plaese post your findings...

Here is a link to the NT4 HCL in which I do not find the IBM RS/6000 listed.

Hope you find your answer...
