In an effort to learn more about our phone system I logged on to our Definity switch using the terminal that is attached to it instead of Avaya Site Administration. While doing a 'change station' I realized there isn't a cancel or logoff option. Using all the Unix keyboard commands I know only succeeded in locking the terminal session and now I can't do anything on the terminal and can't access the switch via Avaya Site Administration or telnet.

How do I reset the terminal connection without rebooting the switch?

Kent

BTW--I have turned off the terminal but that didn't fix it.

What about disconnecting the cable from the terminal to the switch?

Kent

Starting on page 143 will list the SAT terminals and the keyboard function keys for you. For now I think you can unplug the cable going from the terminal to the switch and it will reset.

Unfortunately, disconnecting the serial cable didn't change anything. The terminal is still locked and Avaya Site Admin still gives the message:

Communications error: Connection closed by peer.

Connect everything back up and use the function keys that are in the manual I posted for you. Their is (I don't remember what they are) a stroke of keys that will bring up on top of the sat terminal what keys are what. This should allow you to cancel the commands you started. f1 may be cancel.

Still nothing. All I can do is get to the terminal setup menu.

1. Cntl + F1 to access the Setup menu
2. F4 to select the User Preferences sub-menu
3. Down arrow to the Parallel Port field
4. F4 to enable the option
5. F1, F5, F1 to return to Setup, save selections, and exit

It looks like Control + f1 gets you to the setup window.
F4 to the users key setup

That will display the keys that are programmed. That may let you out.

login to the switch via ASA over yor LAN (if you can do that), then type "status logins". on the right side of that you should see a "session #", when you identify the hung up session, try typing "reset session x", and see if that forces it to logoff for you, and brings back the prompt on your SAT terminal

I was able to changed the parallel port settings and get out of the setup menu. Still can't get to a log-in prompt.

Mitch, we supposedly are able to have up to two terminal connections to the switch but I still can't connect. Maybe the other session is locked also. One thing I haven't tried is to connect via dial-up, there is a line available. That may be my next step.

I just tried dialing in to our main switch. I was able to connect via modem but did not get a log-in prompt. I dialed in to our switch in a neighboring building and was able to log on so it appears to be a problem on our main switch. I guess we'll have to arrange for a service call to reboot the switch.

Thanks for your suggestions.

If the login process stops working, yes, your only choice is a switch reboot. I have seen this happen with certain older releases on CSI/SI switches.

Try logging onto the SAT terminal then use the control F1 to get the setup menu.

Then tab across to the last tab there should be an option to terminate communications to the com ports. It might save you a reboot.

Thanks, Colby, but I'm not seeing that option. Different terminal maybe?

to me, it sounds like the "login process" is hung, and not responding, I have seen this happen with a few different releases on the old SI/CSI platforms, the only cure I have ever found it, rebooting the switch, as dialing in via modem, connecting via CLAN (if that is supported on his release), using the Serial SAT terminal connection, or using a data module, all fail to repond and appear dead. Reboot is the only solution I have ever found that works.

That sounds like a serious undertaking. How is it done without a console? Don't worry, I promise I won't try it.

Power switch? Power the switch down, wait a minute, power it back up. Hopefully it will all come back and bootup in 5-15 minutes.

A tech came to check on our switch and said that a reboot should take care of our problems. He showed us where the power switch is located and we rebooted it yesterday after work. We can now connect via ASA but the terminal is still messed up. Not such a big deal since we have ASA.

Thanks for all your help.
