I am running w2003 server with 2 DC's, DNS, WINS and DHCP.

DHCP lease = 2 days

I have noticed that my DNS records are old and showing ips for computers that have not been on the network for some time. As well these old listed IP's in the DNS are actually being used by other computers. DHCP Address leases seems to be accurate.

We notice on the properties of the DNS server that Enable auto scavaging of stale records was not checked.

Also the Set Aging/Scavenging for all Zones was not check either.
I have enabled both and used the default of 7 days.

Have I done the right thing to keep DNS up to date and is there anything I'm missing?

Also,
In DHCP MMC -
Right-Cick on your DHCP server choose properties.

DNS Tab
Check 'Enable DNS dynamic updates...
For the option I use "Always dynamically update...
Check 'Discard A and PTR Records when lease is deleted.

I have 2 DNS servers internally and I am assuming the settings should be the same on both?

What is your suggestion on the relationshiop of the DHCP lease of 2 days and the DNS scavaging of 7 days?

If DHCP is configured to remove records when lease is deleted then there would be no records to scavange.

I have cfg DHCP as you suggested above. It was orginally on but with Dnamically update instead of Always.

Am I understanding that when a client gets an ip that the DHCP server will then update the DNS records? Deleting/updated when necessaary. If a record goes unchanged and the same client doesn't reconnect (eg dead hardware) that the record will be removed from DHCP and DNS.

If the DHCP lease expires, then the lease is removed from DHCP and the ip is place back in the pool. DHCP removes the reocrd (dynamically) in DNS.
