Hello Guys,

I've just got my server box up and running, everything seems to be running smoothly, DC, DHCP, FTP, HTTP and other bits and pieces.

I currently have the domain set as 'company.local' as suggested by the installation wizzard, but i'm looking to take our .com domain inhouse and host it ourselves as it gives us better control over the ColdFuion server.

Now, i've assigned a secondary IP address to the NIC sat in the box, which is 192.168.1.101, and configured the site using IIS and also slapped on an FTP host for the site.

When browsing on the local network to the site displays perfectly, and I also have ftp://192... working as it should do.

I have a static IP attached to our broadband line, and port forwarding for ports 80 and 21 to the internal IP address, so if i now access our public IP address the site displays as it should do.

Now, the bit i'm unsure on is having our public domain companyname.com resolve to the internal server rather than our current external webserver.

What steps do i need to take? presumably setup 'headers' in IIS to recognise the company external domain? And perhaps contact our hosting provider and have them re-point the domains to our public IP address?

Any help you can offer is greatly appreciated.

Many Thanks

Rob

I think you pretty much have it all coverd Rob, there isn't much else I can think of. Do you have external mail services provided by your host also?

Hope this Helps.

Yes the mail is currently handled by our external host, and i think i'll probably keep it that way to be honest.

I do have Exchange server installed on the box but we're not currently using it, although we plan to.

The idea was to have a pop connector grab the mail from the webserver and then distrobute it.

We have to sites at the company, and the one which has a mail address attached to it will remain with our current hosts, its simply our management site which doesn't require email that we are brining in house.

I'd still be interested in knowing how we would do so if we were to though.

Ok Guys,

I'm having a little trouble getting this kick started properly.

Everything is now up and running from my perspective, I have the FTP and WebServer running fine, i can access the site from an internal IP address.

Next up i have a Static IP assigned to my business broadband line, and the outside world can browse to that IP address and they can see the site in all its glorey.

Now I'm stuck with placing a domain facia over that IP address with my ISP. I've purchased and parked the domain name with my ISP, and when asking them to point it to my IP address they start kicking up a fuss about wanting a 'Name Server'

Now I've come accross this whole 'name server' business before, but only when transfering hosts, my understanding of my situation is that my best option is to keep the domain with my ISP, and just have it 'pointed' to my IP address? is this not correct?

Thanks,

Rob

That's pretty much it in a nutshell. Are they saying they don't have one? The ISP should have a nameserver or *their* provider should have a nameserver.

(yay! shameless advertising. my side business)

We're all sorted now thanks pal,

My ISP tech support team were trying to tell me that it wasn't possible to ammend the DNS A Records to point the domain at our public faced IP.

I ended up having to send them instructions on how to do it, can you believe that?

Oh well, its done now,

Thanks,

Rob
